Stain of slavery Congress debates reparations to atone for Americas original sin

first_imgUS politics Sign up for Bookmarks: discover new books in our weekly email Reuse this content For the first time in more than a decade, a debate has taken place between lawmakers in Congress on the original sin of the United States – the enslavement of 4 million Africans and their descendants – and the question of what can be done to atone for it through reparations. This article is more than 4 weeks old Last modified on Wed 19 Jun 2019 17.59 EDT This article is more than 4 weeks old Share on WhatsApp Share via Email @edpilkington Ed Pilkington in Washington Share on Twitter ‘Stain of slavery’: Congress debates reparations to atone for America’s original sin Danny Glover among witnesses who debated the legacy of slavery – and the modern scourges of inequality and poverty that afflict black Americans Slavery reparations bill debated in US House hearing – video highlights Stinney was aged 14 when he was executed by electric chair in 1944 after a trial for murder of two white girls that was later overturned as unfair. Woodard was blinded after he was attacked by South Carolina police in 1946 – he was still in uniform having recently been honorably discharged from the US army as a second world war veteran.Among the other celebrated witnesses was Danny Glover, the star of the Lethal Weapon movies and a longtime reparations advocate. He said that a national reparations policy was a “moral, democratic and economic imperative”.Glover described himself as the great-grandson of Mary Brown, who was freed from slavery on 1 January 1863 when the emancipation declaration came down. He remembers meeting her when he was a small child.“I call on all elected public officials to demonstrate your commitment in action today and co-sign HR 40,” Glover said. But despite the new wind in the sails of the reparations movement , the idea of making amends for the wounds of slavery still faces a steep uphill struggle.Opinion polls suggest that the American people remain divided over the idea. A Point Taken-Marist survey from 2016 found that 80% of Americans said they were opposed to reparations, with 60% of African Americans saying they were in favor. The debate at the judiciary subcommittee was similarly starkly partisan. While the seats reserved for Democratic lawmakers were full, the places for their Republican colleagues were largely empty for the duration.Republican Congress members and their invited witnesses followed McConnell’s lead and argued that the sins of a small minority of Americans more than 150 years could not be loaded on to the shoulders of today’s taxpayers. Burgess Owens, a retired NFL player who spoke as a Republican witness, said that as a black man his main inspiration had been his father. “He inspired young people to work harder – if they pulled themselves up by the bootstraps, work harder than the next guy, that’s not racist – that’s the American way.” Now a new head of steam has built up, unprecedented in recent times. Of the 20 Democratic White House hopefuls who will be appearing at the first televised debates in Miami next week, 15 have indicated they would back a government study of the sort put forward in HR 40.One of them, Cory Booker, has sponsored a companion bill in the US Senate that echoes the House version. Booker has enticed five other presidential candidates – his fellow US senators Kirsten Gillibrand, Kamala Harris, Amy Klobuchar, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren – to join him as co-sponsors.The frontrunner in the Democratic pack, Joe Biden, by contrast, has remained non-committal.Booker addressed the reparations hearing, saying: “The stain of slavery was not just inked in bloodshed, but in policies that have disadvantaged African Americans for generations.”The political explanation for the sudden uptick in interest in reparations lies in the dynamics of the 2020 race. Democratic candidates jockeying for position in a crowded field know that they must attract the support of African American voters in next year’s primaries if they are to have a chance of becoming the nominee to take on Donald Trump. In the early primary state of South Carolina, more than 60% of the Democratic electorate is black. But Wednesday’s hearing was not only infused with the pragmatic needs of the presidential contenders. The idea of reparations has begun to develop a life of its own amid growing alarm about the racial direction in which America is moving. In particular, concern has increased over the mounting racial wealth gap. As Elizabeth Warren, another leading presidential hopeful, frequently points out on the campaign trail, for every $100 enjoyed by the average white family, their black equivalent has only about $5.Black families have an average net worth of $17,100, a tenth of the average accumulated wealth of white households, according to US government statistics. Economists routinely point to the legacy of slavery as a starting point to explain the wealth gap. That case was most forcefully put at the hearing by Ta-Nehisi Coates, the author who helped kickstart the modern debate on reparations with an excoriating article in the Atlantic magazine five years ago. Coates said that it was impossible to divorce the evils of slavery from the modern suffering of black communities across America, because out of slavery came the implantation in the American mind that black people are inferior. That idea of black inferiority was codified not just in the culture but in laws themselves, and persists powerfully today.Coates launched into a devastating takedown of Mitch McConnell, the Republican majority leader in the US Senate who on Tuesday pre-empted the reparations debate by outright dismissing it. In a statement, McConnell had said: ““I don’t think reparations for something that happened 150 years ago for whom none of us currently living are responsible is a good idea.”That set Coates off on a long monologue in which he pointed out that though McConnell may not have been around during slavery, he certainly was around for the injuries heaped upon black communities in more recent times. “For a century after the civil war black people were subjected to a relentless campaign of terror, a campaign that extended well into the lifetime of majority leader McConnell,” he said.McConnell may not have been there for the Battle of Appomattox at the end of the civil war, “but he was alive for the execution of George Stinney, he was alive for the blinding of Isaac Woodard”. “I am not here in anger. I am not seeking to encourage hostilities,” Jackson Lee said. But she said of the concept of reparations: “Why not? And why not now? If not all of us, then who?”The idea of reparations is as old as emancipation itself, having been enshrined in the promise approved by Abraham Lincoln to recompense freed slaves on southern land with “40 acres and a mule”. That pledge was revoked by Lincoln’s successor, Andrew Johnson. But in the modern era, it has periodically risen up again, championed by advocates and politicians. The Rev Jesse Jackson made it a pillar of his 1988 presidential campaign. 3:25 Since you’re here… Share on Twitter news Shares395395 Facebook Pinterest Ta-Nehisi Coates Slavery Democrats Share on Messenger Topics Wed 19 Jun 2019 13.56 EDT Share on Facebook Share on Facebook At a hearing at a House judiciary subcommittee on Wednesday, lawmakers and their witnesses ranged over the legacy of slavery, the Jim Crow segregation that followed and modern scourges of mass incarceration, inequality and poverty that still plague African Americans. As the writer Ta-Nehisi Coates summed up the discussion: “It was 150 years ago and it is right now.”The hearing convened poignantly on Juneteenth, marking the day in 1865 when Union troops landed in Galveston, Texas, finally bringing freedom to slaves across the defeated south. That the debate has been a long time coming was demonstrated by the large numbers of people, most of them black, who attended the proceedings.Inside the committee room, the sense of pent-up emotion being released was made plain through outbursts of booing and cheering as lawmakers and witnesses aligned to the two main parties made their cases. The focus of the debate was HR 40, a House bill that was first introduced in 1989 by John Conyers, former Democratic congressman from Michigan. Since 2017, following Conyers’ departure from the House, the bill has been sponsored by Sheila Jackson Lee, the congresswoman from Texas. Her legislation would establish a 13-person government commission to study possible forms of compensation for the descendants of slaves as well as “any other forms of rehabilitation or restitution”.Jackson Lee began by setting out the sobering statistics of slavery and its aftermath. She pointed out the 10 to 15 million Africans who were transported by force across the Atlantic, 2 million of whom died during the Middle Passage. She then leapt forward to the present day, laying out the similarly stark statistics of African American disadvantage. One million black people are incarcerated, black unemployment stands at 6.6% – more than double the national rate, and 31% of black children live in poverty, also more than twice the national figure. Nvidia vs AMD Do GPUs Degrade in Performance Over Time

first_img The Biggest Movie Remake Box Office Bombs Ever 10 Scientifically Proven Side Effects of Growing a Beard The Radeon Vega 64 is the big winner here, climbing 1.14x, while Turing and Pascal both pick up about 1.11x. The GeForce GTX 1080 still gains 1.07x. The Radeon VII is the only GPU to show flat minimum performance.<><>123456 Helen From ‘Waterworld’ Is 56 Now and Incredibly Gorgeous One of the areas where reviews sometimes fall short is in providing perspective on how component performance evolves over time. While the yearly new hardware launch cadence provides periodic opportunities to revisit how older components stack up to newer ones, the focus in any given launch is going to be on the CPU or GPU that’s being launched, not previous cards. Title-specific coverage, meanwhile, is typically measured and written in the days immediately following a launch, often as part of a game or product review. Stack these two trends together, and it can be more difficult than it ought to be for gamers to figure out how performance has changed over time and to tease out which GPUs are holding their value better than others. With this in mind, we’ve completed an analysis of the data sets we gathered in our recent review of AMD’s Radeon RX 5700 and Radeon RX 5700 XT, as well as the Gigabyte Aorus RTX 2080 Xtreme 8GB. We updated all of our GPU data sets in late June / early July of 2019, which makes this a good time to look back at how Pascal, Turing, and GCN performance have each evolved over the past nine months. We’re specifically watching for two trends. First, there have been a number of general concerns from gamers about the ongoing impact of Meltdown and Spectre patches on game performance. Second, there is a perception in certain circles that Nvidia GPUs lose performance more quickly than their AMD counterparts, either because of intrinsic characteristics of Nvidia GPU design or because the company deliberately handicaps older cards to make newer GPUs look better by comparison. If I’m being honest, I’ve never believed the more sinister version of this argument. Nvidia and AMD pursued somewhat different optimization strategies in the pre-DX12 era, and Nvidia can reasonably be assumed to focus its optimization efforts on newer GPUs rather than older cards. This is not unique to Nvidia, however. Now that AMD has RDNA in-market, it may have to make decisions about how to prioritize its time when working to optimize for its various architectures as well. There is a difference between saying that Nvidia may focus more on optimizing for newer cards and saying that Nvidia deliberately handicaps older GPUs. In any event, the goal here is to measure how performance has evolved over time in the same suite of titles. We’ll see where the results take us.Test SetupAll of our tests were run on an Asus Prime Z370-A motherboard, with 32GB of DDR4-3200 using an Intel Core i7-8086K. The September 2018 Nvidia GPUs were tested using the 411.63 Turing launch driver, while the June retest used the 430.86 Nvidia driver. The AMD Radeon 64 and Radeon VII used the Adrenaline 19.5.2 driver. A Samsung 1TB 970 EVO was used for storage. The September 2018 tests were run using Windows 10 1803, while the June 2019 tests were run under Windows 10 1903. All Meltdown, Spectre, and related patches were left in default states. While the dates for the comparison are set to September 2018 and June 2019, this is obviously a bit of a fudge in the Radeon VII’s case (the Radeon VII didn’t launch until February). The Radeon VII’s June performance is being compared with its launch performance in this case. Two games showed performance declines across both Radeon and GeForce hardware: Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation and Warhammer II. Both games showed declines in all APIs, though AotS: Escalation lost more performance. This is theorized to be the result of Spectre et al protections. No other games showed performance declines, and the declines in these specific titles were not large enough to change the overall trend across our suite of games. We measured performance in Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Hitman, Metro Last Light Redux, Middle Earth: Shadow of War, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Warhammer II, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Assassin’s Creed: Origins, and Far Cry 5. The performance figures given for each GPU in each resolution reflect the geometric mean of our results. We used a geometric mean instead of an arithmetic mean to calculate averages to account for the fact that minimum frame rates can vary widely by game — Hitman, for example, regularly returns minimum frame rates for all GPUs between 4 – 12fps.Our September coverage used a standard GeForce RTX 2080, while the June 2019 data is based on the Gigabyte Aorus RTX 2080 Xtreme, which has slightly higher clock rates. This may have had a slight impact on performance (1-2 percent), but the difference is not large enough to be an issue for our purposes.ResultsThe slideshow below contains our results, graphed by resolution and by minimum versus average frame rates. 98 Comments Nvidia vs. AMD: Do GPUs Degrade in Performance Over Time? Terms of use. By Joel Hruska on July 15, 2019 at 7:39 am Conclusion:The minimum frame rate improvements at 1080p and 1440p are quite solid for Vega 64, the RTX 2080, and the GTX 1080 Ti. The average level of improvement is smaller across the board for all cards, but this isn’t necessarily surprising. Vega 64 and Radeon VII are both based on GCN, and GCN has been AMD’s lead architecture for a number of years — long enough to be well-optimized, at this point. Nvidia’s RTX 2080 picks up the most consistent gains across all resolutions, probably thanks to the minor clock tap or the fact that Turing is the newest architecture and had the most performance still on the table. Even the GTX 1080 picks up a few frames at 1080p.There is no evidence that Nvidia has taken any action to harm Pascal performance or to make its older, 2016 GPUs look less attractive than more recent cards. There are no Pascal performance regressions or frame rate issues in any game that do not affect every GPU (that’s why we think the performance decline in Ashes and Warhammer II is CPU-related, not GPU-related). Vega 64’s performance may have come up the most, but Vega 64 has been on the market for less time than the Pascal family. Despite these improvements, it also only matches or slightly underperforms the GTX 1080 at every resolution and in both minimum and average frame rates. The relative performance of these AMD and NV cards relative to each other has shifted only modestly. The implication of these findings is only to the good, no matter which GPU you own. AMD or Nvidia, Vega and Pascal cards both show continued expected performance, while Turing’s slightly larger improvements are what we’d expect for a relatively newer architecture. Obviously the particulars of how a GPU architecture ages are going to be specific to each architecture, and since this review didn’t focus on older cards from the Maxwell or Kepler era, we can’t speak to the situations with those GPUs. But as far as Pascal is concerned, Nvidia’s last-generation architecture appears to be aging quite well, while AMD has also improved on Vega’s performance. Now Read:AMD’s RX 5700 and RX 5700 XT Reviewed: RDNA Puts Radeon Back in the GameNvidia RTX 2060, 2070 Super: Better GPU Performance, Same PriceMeet RDNA: AMD’s Long-Awaited New GPU Architecture Tagged In amdgamingnvidiagpusPascalVegaturingGTX 1080RTX 2080Vega 64GTX 1080 Tirise of the tomb raiderRX 5700Core i7-8086Kassassin’s creed originsRX 5700 XTshadow of the tomb raiderWindows 10 1903hitmanGigabyte Aorus RTX 2080 Xtremefar cry 5Deus Ex: Mankind DividedWarhammer IIWindows 10 1803Ashes of the Singularity EscalationMetro Last Light ReduxMiddle Earth: Shadow of War Post a Comment 98 Commentslast_img read more

Nvidia Built One of the Most Powerful AI Supercomputers in 3 Weeks

first_img Willow Smith’s Transformation is Turning Heads By Adam Dachis on June 20, 2019 at 10:08 am The Truth About Honey Boo Boo’s Sister Lauryn 11 Comments Autonomous vehicles: they’re not perfect and sometimes they kill people. But they also hold the promise of safer transportation—and far fewer jobs—in the relatively near future. To help these vehicles upgrade their intelligence from causing fatal accidents to preventing them, Nvidia created the DGX SuperPod, an AI-optimized supercomputer that can help design a better self-driving car.Nvidia made it very clear it wants to be amongst the leaders in artificial intelligence and decided to build a supercomputer to demonstrate that. It only took the company three weeks to build by connecting 96 Nvidia DGX-2H supercomputers with Mellanox interconnect technology. You can actually buy it, too, if the novelty of your sixth yacht has worn off and you have $435,000 burning a hole in your pocket.  That’s how much one DGX-2H costs at list price. The DGX SuperPod uses 96 of them. If you want to make a self-driving car, it seems Nvidia thinks it’ll cost somewhere in the ballpark of $41,760,000 to get started with the best hardware. Clearly, these systems were designed for large corporations.Image credit: NVIDIAWith 1,536 Nvidia V100 Tensor Core GPUs, the SuperPod packs a lot of power for a relatively small system (by supercomputer standards). Nevertheless, if you want people to invest in anything that expensive you might want to prove that it’s up to the toughest of tasks. That’s why Nvidia decided to make its SuperPod build assist in solving one of the most difficult problems in AI.Autonomous vehicles require an enormous amount of training data compared with technologies that use similar image classification models for other purposes (e.g. diagnostic medicine). The AI in a self-driving car isn’t looking for something specific and it needs to consider all of its surroundings and understand them well enough to safely function. That amounts in approximately one terabyte of data per vehicle per hour and the AI that powers autonomous vehicles needs to retrain itself continuously over time using data from an entire fleet. Nvidia decided to demonstrate how its SuperPod can help expedite the processing of training data measured in petabytes:The system is hard at work around the clock, optimizing autonomous driving software and retraining neural networks at a much faster turnaround time than previously possible.  For example, the DGX SuperPod hardware and software platform takes less than two minutes to train ResNet-50. When this AI model came out in 2015, it took 25 days to train on the then state-of-the-art system, a single Nvidia K80 GPU. DGX SuperPOD delivers results that are 18,000x faster.  While other TOP500 systems with similar performance levels are built from thousands of servers, DGX SuperPOD takes a fraction of the space, roughly 400x smaller than its ranked neighbors. While the DGX-2H happens to perform best using ResNet-50, those numbers would remain impressive when scaled for just about any image classification model. You should expect impressive performance from a multi-million dollar system, but accomplishing that at such a small (relative) size it’s clear why Nvidia has remained dominant the AI hardware market. What kind of advancements might such capable hardware lead to?  Nvidia demonstrated that as well with a new and more accurate method of calculating distance from objects in three-dimensional space so autonomous vehicles can more easily prevent collisions.Nvidia explains some of the key areas where this new approach helps to improve safety:[W]e use convolutional neural networks and data from a single front camera. The DNN is trained to predict the distance to objects by using radar and lidar sensor data as ground-truth information. Engineers know this information is accurate because direct reflections of transmitted radar and lidar signals pro precise distance-to-object information, regardless of a road’s topology.  By training the neural networks on radar and lidar data instead of relying on the flat ground assumption, we enable the DNN to estimate distance to objects from a single camera, even when the vehicle is going up or down hill.It seems like Nvidia has some new advancement in artificial intelligence on almost a weekly basis—even if it’s just a more efficient method of turning your dog into a lion. Perhaps that’s because the company can build one of the most efficiently powerful supercomputers in the world in three weeks. When you don’t have to wait very long to process an enormous amount of data, you can quickly test new ideas and find the optimal solution a lot faster. You just need around $40 million dollars to get started.Top image credit: NvidiaNow read:Nvidia Crushes Self to Take AI Benchmark CrownGoogle’s EfficientNet Offers up to a 10x Boost in Image Analysis EfficiencyNvidia AI Turns Doodles Into Realistic Landscapes<span data-mce-type=”bookmark” style=”display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;” class=”mce_SELRES_start”></span> You Might Also LikePowered By ZergNet Maisie Williams’ Transformation is Turning Heads Nvidia Built One of the Most Powerful AI Supercomputers in 3 Weeks Facebook Twitter Linkedin Pinterest Google Plus Reddit Hacker News Flipboard Email Copy 37shares This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. MarTech Interview with Damon Henry Founder and CEO KORTX

first_img “The challenge for advertisers is that the audience data they’re collecting is siloed within a given campaign channel. What they learn about a customer on SnapChat they’re not able to incorporate into a programmatic display campaign.” About DamonAbout KORTXAbout Damon Damon Henry is the Founder and CEO of KORTX and has led the company since its beginning in 2014. Passionate about building teams and products, Damon started KORTX to demystify the complex marketing and ad-tech ecosystem for brands and agencies. A developer at heart, Damon cross trained in various lead roles managing cross-functional software teams and large media programs for clients such as the U.S. Navy, Chevy, Chrysler, and PulteGroup. He holds an MBA from the University of Michigan. The MTS Martech Interview Series is a fun Q&A style chat which we really enjoy doing with martech leaders. With inspiration from Lifehacker’s How I work interviews, the MarTech Series Interviews follows a two part format On Marketing Technology, and This Is How I Work. The format was chosen because when we decided to start an interview series with the biggest and brightest minds in martech – we wanted to get insight into two areas … one – their ideas on marketing tech and two – insights into the philosophy and methods that make these leaders tick. MarTech Interview Series About KORTXcenter_img Tell us about your role and journey into Technology. What inspired you to start KORTX IO?I’ve been writing software since I was a teenager. After studying computer science, I was fortunate to land a job at a traditional ad agency. Here my colleague and I were tasked with developing the agency’s first digital services group. We were terrified but successfully built a team supporting major brands such as Chevy and the U.S. Navy. Since then I’ve either worked for startups or started new practices within existing companies. Most of my jobs were heavily focused in technology, data and analytics, and digital media.Through these experiences, I saw the rate of technological change and its impact on marketing and advertising. For most marketers it was challenging to develop an approach to MarTech that could evolve with the business. IT made most of the technology decisions and the concept of data ownership was all but foreign. We built KORTX to help advertisers and marketers navigate this complex digital landscape through best-in-class service, programmatic buying, analytics, and technical solutions. What is KORTX IO and how does it fit into a modern CMO’s Marketing Technology stack?KORTX is a hybrid: part programmatic partner, data and analytics agency, and technology solutions provider. This is the three-legged stool from which the company was founded and those are the core areas we continue to invest in. I’m a strong believer that real digital transformation requires clear vision, owning data across platforms, and an intimate understanding of how the pieces fit together. Not in theory, but in practice and at scale. KORTX has done the legwork building solutions from the ground up to solve real business problems.Every marketer faces strategic challenges and requires a team of dynamic individuals (internal and external) that can, frankly, figure things out at the speed of business. CMOs rely on KORTX to bring our expertise to every engagement whether it be defining the appropriate programmatic buying strategy, supporting data engineering and analytics services, or deploying custom machine learning models to improve targeting and segmentation. KORTX exists to simplify complex problems.According to you, which businesses are fastest in adopting Marketing Technology platforms for personalized Customer Experience?Gartner defines customer experience as “the practice of designing and reacting to customer interactions to meet or exceed customer expectations and, thus, increase customer satisfaction, loyalty and advocacy.” While CPG, Automotive, Banking, and Retail are known as CX first movers, with 1 in 3 customers leaving a brand after one bad experience and 87% of firms saying digital disruption will affect their industry, the need to develop intimate relationships with customers transcends every business. What are the technical challenges that you face in the adoption and deployment of Marketing Technology platforms? The challenges we encounter are almost never technical.  The primary obstacles to adoption are getting buy-in from the top and not having defined goals with clear ties to business outcomes. A program’s success is a function of these two variables.Implementing marketing technology, and technology in general, involves making the business case to IT, security, procurement, and other stakeholders within an organization. The client must have influencers across these disciplines. We work with clients to identify these individuals at the onset of every engagement. If the client can’t get support from above, the likelihood of failure is high and it’s a project we will not accept.Another common problem we encounter is “bright, shiny object” syndrome, where clients want to add new products prior to fully understanding how the new product adds business value and fits within the existing technology stack and data strategy. It’s difficult to keep up with the volume of new products developments even for those immersed in the industry, let alone someone who’s full-time job is not evaluating technology. We work with clients to help them define their marketing road map and justify investments with sound business decisions.Which markets and geographies are you currently catering to?KORTX currently provides services in North America. We work with brands and agencies of all sizes, from the regional level to some of the Fortune 500’s most recognizable names. We’ve executed in virtually every industry from automotive, CPG and entertainment to healthcare, education, government and more.Tell us about the new-age integrations that KORTX offers with other Marketing Technology platforms such as Contacts, Contracts, Email and Customer Service.KORTX’s data unification technology, the AXON platform, is the cornerstone of our competitive advantage. There is an arsenal of MarTech platforms and tools that those of us in the digital media technology space use to run effective campaigns, and every engagement point we establish presents an opportunity to learn more about an audience. The challenge for advertisers is that the audience data they’re collecting is siloed within a given campaign channel. What they learn about a customer on SnapChat they’re not able to incorporate into a programmatic display campaign, for example.KORTX developed the AXON platform to tear down those data siloes. AXON ingests data from the innumerable locations its being stored and created into a single platform, updating customer profiles in real time so our clients can build nuanced audience segments. KORTX can then target those segments across channels, delivering uniquely relevant content.AXON harnesses the collective power of today’s disparate landscape, driving campaign performance across the board and setting in motion a snowball-like digital strategy that gets even more effective with time.Which Marketing and Sales Automation tools and technologies do you currently use in your current roles? We recently began rolling out HubSpot’s marketing automation platform, which our sales and marketing teams use for lead intake, nurturing and tracking. On the AdTech side, we have a preferred partnership with AppNexus and utilize tested industry leaders with varying specialties such as ad verification, social, video, machine learning and more. What are your predictions on the most impactful disruptions in AI and Data Management technology on CRM businesses for 2019-2020?Cognitive technology (AI, ML, and “robots”), serverless computing, and stream processing will continue to reshape the entire technological ecosystem (including CRM) by making automated tasks seem less automated, drastically reducing the cost of expensive data processing workloads, and delivering relevant experiences in seconds. These improvements reduce the friction between data and activation which is great for CRM businesses.CRM vendors will also continue to consolidate and develop intelligent orchestration layers atop the various acquisitions. The goal, of course, is helping sales and marketing teams focus on what’s important while balancing the delivery of exceptional customer experiences. Coordinating (and automating) communications across email, advertising, chat, CRM, contact centers and activities is only the start when considering the emergence of in-home and IOT. These are very exciting times. What startups in the technology industry are you watching keenly right now?Serverless isn’t a startup but more of a movement. The cost savings in terms of operations, hosting, and development, under certain circumstances, are staggering. I’m constantly evaluating how serverless can improve our clients’ businesses bottom line while decreasing time to market.Unomi, an open source customer data platform, should send chills down the spines of some established vendors. We’ve evaluated and implemented Unomi for a client and were blown away by its performance and features, native support for privacy, and emphasis on data ownership.H20.ai has democratized artificial intelligence by developing a scalable, open source AI solution that dramatically simplifies the development and deployment of AI models into production. Modeling exercises that once required a team of statisticians can be performed by math savvy engineers. How do you prepare for an AI-centric world as a Martech Business leader?AI requires two fundamental resources: math and data engineering. Most of the AI/ML models (the math) required to produce value for the majority of businesses have been developed and are freely available as open source solutions. Data engineering is the process of collecting data from disparate systems, cleaning/processing/enriching data, training models, and deploying models to production in a continuous manner. This is where the real value lies. Owning our data and investing in these technical competencies gives us the ability to go where ever the market takes us.How do you inspire your people to work with technology? One of KORTX core values is Continuous Learnings. Everything we do involves technology. If you’re not passionate, or at a minimum interested in technology, you’re likely in the wrong job. I don’t need to inspire the team to work with technology. The team continues to inspire me every day.One word that best describes how you work.CuriousWhat apps/software/tools can’t you live without?ShiftSlackWhat’s your smartest work related shortcut or productivity hack?Patience. Election 2019 BitterlyFought Lok Sabha Poll Campaign Comes to An End

first_imgSimultaneously, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi also addressed a press conference at the AICC headquarters in the national capital. The controversy around Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse took yet another turn today after Prime Minister Narendra Modi came down heavily on BJP candidate Pragya Thakur for her remarks, saying he would never be able to forgive her for insulting the father of the nation. Meanwhile, Modi, on the last day of campaigning, gave the slogan ‘Abki Baar 300 Paar’, saying he was sure the BJP would exceed expectations. Congress chief Rahul Gandhi in Solan mocked the Prime Minister for insulting his ‘guru’ LK Advani as well as his cloud cover remark. His sister and Congress’ eastern UP incharge Priyanka Gandhi Vadra took a swipe at Modi, saying voters might as well have chosen actor Amitabh Bachchan instead of the great actor Modi.Besides, a day after eggs and stones were thrown at actor-turned politician Kamal Haasan for saying that “independent India’s first extremist was a Hindu”, the MNM chief has issued a clarification over his statements.Haasan, who made the remark in an apparent reference to Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse during campaign in Aravakurichi on Sunday, said that he doesn’t feel threatened. “History shows there are extremists in all religions, my speech that day was about peace and harmony and I will not indulge in mudslinging,” he said.last_img read more

2 Bills Sent by Tamil Nadu to Exclude it from NEET Rejected

first_img Home Ministrypresident ram nath govindTamil NaduTamil Nadu NEET First Published: July 6, 2019, 10:34 PM IST Chennai: The Home Ministry has informed the Madras High Court that the president has rejected two bills, which were sent to his office in 2017 by the Tamil Nadu government, to exclude the state from the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET).Counsels for the Union government said they received a communication from the ministry that the bills — the Tamil Nadu Admission to MBBS and BDS Courses Bill, 2017 and the Tamil Nadu Admission to Post Graduate Courses in Medicine and Dentistry — were received on February 20, 2017. This was stated by the counsels when the division bench, comprising Justices S Manikumar and Subramonium Prasad, sought a clarification on whether the bills were withheld or rejected. When the plea came up for hearing on Friday, the Union government made the submission that the bills were rejected.Recording the same, the bench directed the home ministry to file an affidavit by July 16, setting out details of receipt of the bills, in particular the date of rejection, as submitted by counsel of the Union government. The counsels made the submission on a PIL moved by the Tamil Nadu Students Parents Welfare, seeking direction to the state government to complete the procedures for obtaining the presidential assent for the bills on or before August 15, 2017.Opposition parties in Tamil Nadu have for long demanded exemption of the state from NEET, especially after three girls committed suicide in June after failing to clear the test. The DMK has said their party MPs would raise the issue in Parliament, a demand backed by the CPI(M).While the PMK has contended that there is not a single reason to justify NEET, the MDMK has said that the Centre, by making the exam compulsory, has shattered the dreams of those from poor, backward and scheduled castes who want to study medicine. The Congress has said that scrapping NEET would be good for the state and that the issue would be raised in Parliament. However, the BJP state unit has blamed the opposition leaders for going against NEET for “political reasons.” last_img read more

Outspoken Giriraj Singh to Take Charge as Minister of Animal Husbandry Dairying

first_imgNew Delhi: Giriraj Singh, the former minister of state for micro, has now been given as Ministry of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet. A former MP from Nawada, Singh has formerly served as minister of Cooperative, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Resource Development in the government of Bihar. Performance in 2019 Lok Sabha electionsSingh contested from Begusarai, a seat from where he claimed he was not comfortable since his stronghold was Nawada. After much back and forth with the party, Singh fought from Begusarai against Left candidate Kanhaiya Kumar. Singh had camped in Delhi for days, protesting the move and refusing to start his campaign. He eventually defeated Kumar by a record of four lakh votes.Singh’s campaign, though, attracted flak from the Election Commission, prompting a notice. “I want to say that those who don’t say Vande Mataram can’t worship the motherland – Giriraj’s father and grandfather died on the Simaria ghat by the banks of the Ganga and did not need a grave. You on the other hand, need three-arm’s-length of land. If you don’t do it, the country will never forgive you,” he had said, his remarks targeting the minority community.Political pastSingh had served as the co-operative minister in Bihar from 2005 to 2010 and as animal husbandry minister from 2010 to 2013. One of the most vocal Modi supporters, Singh was one of the 11 ministers dismissed by Nitish Kumar after the JDU-BJP alliance broke off. The former minister has landed in a soup for a number of controversial statements, including one in 2016 in which he had advocated that Hindus needed to increase their population. The same year, he had also said that the country’s population should be controlled by ensuring that families across all religions have the same number of children.#NewsAlert — Giriraj Singh (@girirajsinghbjp) takes the oath of office.#ModiSarkarDobara #ModiRajya pic.twitter.com/AVHZCzST3H— News18 (@CNNnews18) May 30, 2019 biharBJPgiriraj singhModi Govt 2.0 First Published: May 31, 2019, 3:24 PM ISTlast_img read more

SoftBanks solarpowered drone could dispense 5G internet from the skies

first_imgNASA and AeroVironment’s high-altitude drone, Helios Prototype. NASAAn experimental, solar-powered drone capable of beaming internet down to Earth is set to take off. The drone, called the Hawk 30, is the product of a tightlipped partnership between Softbank and AeroVironment, an American aerospace company. The joint venture is aimed at delivering 5G and Internet of Things connectivity from the skies. An agreement signed between NASA and the two companies in November suggests that the Hawk 30 could take off from California’s Armstrong Flight Research Center as early as this week, reports IEEE Spectrum. The agreement entails a series of test flights of up to about 1.86 miles during the next three months.Featuring a single prominent “flying one,” the Hawk 30 is designed like many of the other high-flying solar drones that AeroVironment has built for NASA over the past couple decades. Ten electric engines will carry the drone to an operational altitude of about 12.5 miles, according to filings with the Federal Aviation Administration and the Securities and Exchange Commission.AeroVironment first started building high-altitude, long endurance (HALE) aircraft for NASA over 20 years ago. From 1997, the NASA’s Environmental Research Aircraft and Sensor Technology program funded three solar- and fuel-cell powered drones from AeroVironment. That partnership culminated in the Helios Prototype (picture above), a lightweight drone that in 2001 reached an altitude of 18.5 miles, which remains the record for a winged aircraft. Two years later, the drone broke up in mid-flight and came crashing into the Pacific. In 2010, a Pentagon project saw AeroVironment develop another HALE drone to carry payloads of surveillance and communications systems. This aircraft also crashed in 2011.More recently, companies like Google and Facebook have launched high-altitude, solar-powered aircraft with the promise to beam internet to remote regions around the world. However, both companies eventually scrapped their drone plans. Google’s parent company, Alphabet, has continued its enterprise with Loon, a project to deliver internet via high-altitude balloons.AeroVironment appears undeterred by its past losses, creating a joint venture called HAPSMobile (HAPS is short for “high altitude, pseudo-satellite”) with Softbank in January 2018. Details of the project remain scarce.Meanwhile, companies like Boeing and Airbus are working to develop their own HALE internet drones called Odysseus and Zephyr, respectively. Volunteers sent to bed for 60 consecutive days in offbeat space experiment

first_img Hormone boosts could help astronauts from losing muscle on long space journeys Three new astronauts join the International Space Station crew for Expedition 60 Life after launch: Inside the massive effort to preserve NASA’s space artifacts Methane mystery: Curiosity detects highest-ever levels of methane on Mars How pioneering pilot Jackie Cochran helped and hurt the Women in Space Program Editors’ Recommendations ESAGetting paid $19,000 to spend 60 consecutive days in bed may sound like the stuff of dreams for some folks, but this is precisely what 24 people will be doing in an experiment designed by NASA and its European counterpart, ESA.Launched earlier this week at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Cologne, Germany, the study aims to learn more about the negative effects on the human body of prolonged periods of weightlessness — important if astronauts are ever to embark on long missions into deep space. Now, before you start wishing you were a part of this unusual study, it’s worth noting that the volunteers — 12 men and 12 women — will be kept in beds the whole time, with all experiments, meals, and leisure pursuits taking place lying flat with the bed angled downward toward the head end by six degrees.“As blood flows to their heads and muscle is lost from underuse, researchers will investigate changes and test techniques from diet to physical exercise,” ESA said on its website. “Artificial gravity is one of the techniques under the spotlight this time around and will see some of the participants sent spinning.”Ah, yes. Did we mention the spinning? Once a day, some of the study’s participants will be placed in a short-arm centrifuge and spun around to make their blood flow back toward their feet. This will allow researchers to learn more about the potential of artificial gravity in combating the effects of prolonged weightlessness, which can lead to bone and muscle atrophy.“Currently, astronauts on board the International Space Station exercise for up to 2.5 hours per day and maintain a balanced diet to help mitigate microgravity’s effects, but scientists believe adding a dose of artificial gravity could be key during longer-term missions,” the ESA said.Other experiments conducted during the study will focus on areas such as cardiovascular function, balance, muscle strength, metabolism, and cognitive performance.Hansjörg Dittus, DLR executive board member for Space Research and Technology, said crewed spaceflight will continue to play a vital role in the exploration of our universe, but emphasized the importance of making it as safe as possible for the astronauts. While staying in a bed for two months straight may sound like the simplest of activities, the experiment is actually considered to be so demanding on the human body that all 24 individuals will be kept at the facility for a further 29 days to ensure a safe and healthy recovery. It’s fair to say they’ll probably need a good lie down after all that.last_img read more

Starry Internet reveals 2018 roadmap for 200Mbps wireless

first_imgStarry Internet aims to provide consumers with an alternative to their local Internet Service Provider. More often than not, most people only have one ISP through which to get Internet; sometimes you’ll get lucky and have two options, but that’s not a guarantee. Starry Internet could be that second option for you one day, though. The service costs $50/month flat rate and offers speeds up to 200Mbps. The Internet plan includes a home WiFi hub, plus the service is long-term contract-free. The big catch, though, is that you probably can’t get it where you’re located. That’ll be changing soon for people in Los Angeles and Washington DC, where Starry plans to expand into this year. The company hasn’t provided any additional details, unfortunately, such as when it will be offering the service in these places. Starry says it is doing all of this as a beta for now.Once Starry does arrive in those locations, customers will have access to wireless-based Internet service at speeds up to 200Mbps for the same price as elsewhere. If you’re in either region, you can check out coverage here. The company is also considering the following markets: New York, Cleveland, Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Denver, Seattle, Detroit, Atlanta, Indianapolis, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Miami, and Minneapolis.SOURCE: Starry Blog A couple years ago, Chet Kanojia, the founder of defunct Aereo, announced a startup called Starry Internet aimed at taking on the big broadband companies. Starry Internet has kicked off the new year with a big announcement, relatively speaking: it is bringing its Internet service to two new markets. That’s possibly just the start, though, as the company says it is currently eyeing more than a dozen other regions to expand into.last_img read more

Galaxy S9 price leak is bad news for bargain hunters

first_imgThe Samsung Galaxy S9 will carry an unwelcome price premium over its predecessor, new rumors suggest, as the Android flagship apes the success of the iPhone X. Samsung is expected to take the wraps off the Galaxy S9 – and its larger sibling, the Galaxy S9+ – in just a few weeks time, bringing the smartphones to its latest “Unpacked” event at Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona. Story TimelineGalaxy S9: What we knowGalaxy S9, S9+ components leak, familiar batteries insideGalaxy S9 and S9+ official cases hint at new purple phone color While the handsets won’t make their official debut until February 25, courtesy of numerous leaks over the past few months we’ve already got a pretty solid idea of what to expect. Aesthetically, the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are expected to stick fairly closely to the current Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, including using the same screen sizes. In keeping with Samsung’s Unpacked tagline of “The Camera. Reimagined” the selling point is expected to be a new sensor system. That’ll be based on a brand new camera design that allows the Galaxy S9 to physically switch between two apertures, it’s believed. As well as an f/2.4 aperture, it’s suggested, there’ll be an f/1.5 option too. That Galaxy S9+ is also expected to add a second camera on the back, as per the example already set by the Galaxy Note 8 in late 2017.The only big question still lingering has been what the Galaxy S9 – and its bigger S9+ sibling – might cost. Unfortunately, according to new rumors out of the UK, the answer to that question may well disappoint many would-be buyers. According to a cellphone industry source, speaking to Tech Radar, the Galaxy S9 is set to cost £100 more than the Galaxy S8 did at launch. In the UK, the S8 went on sale in early 2017 for £689, suggesting the Galaxy S9 will be £789. The source claims that Samsung’s premium comes down to the company observing that smartphone buyers are willing to pay a premium for high-end devices like the Note 8 and iPhone X.US pricing is still uncertain, but a $100 increase would seem likely based on this latest leak. With the unlocked S8 starting at around $725 in 2017, that would suggest the Galaxy S9 will be $825 when it goes on sale later this year. As for the Galaxy S9+, given the previous delta between the smaller and larger iterations of Samsung’s phones has been $100, that implies it will cost around $925. It’s a not-inconsiderable amount of money, though Samsung wouldn’t be alone in charging premium pricing. Apple’s strategy with the iPhone X last year was to raise the average selling price of each of its devices, offsetting any potential dip in actual sales numbers. That certainly paid off, too: the company’s recent financial results showed that while iPhone unit sales may have dropped, the amount each of those units actually sold for increased considerably. All the same, Samsung has had to do more price adjustment post-launch with its smartphones in recent years than Apple. Though the Galaxy S8 may have started fairly high – indeed, it launched with a higher sticker price than the Galaxy S7 twelve months before it – it wasn’t long before carrier promotions and Samsung’s own deals brought that pricing down significantly. There’s little to suggest that the Galaxy S9 and S9+ won’t face the same market pressures, once again underscoring that if you want a flagship smartphone bargain, patience is the key.last_img read more

iOS iBoot bootloader source code leaked on GitHub

first_imgThis actually isn’t the first time iBoot source code has been leaked. That happened already last year, but the source and venue (Reddit) lead many to doubt its veracity. Now even leading iOS developers and hackers such as Jonathan Levin confirm that what was made available for public eyes match their own reverse engineering results. In other words, this could very well be the real deal or at least close to it. The version of iBoot is explicitly for iOS 9, but parts of it could still be in use on iOS 11 today. This is a very big deal for the iOS hacking community. iBoot is pretty much the security guard at the front gate of iPhones. It is responsible for ensuring that a verified and secure version of iOS is loaded at boot. Getting access to its source code is the next best thing hackers and modders could get their hands on to get into iOS.Of course it’s not a sure deal yet. What the source code leak simply means is that developers and security researchers will now have a better idea of how iBoot works and, from there, discover the vulnerabilities that, in turn, could help them gain privileged, and unauthorized, access to iOS internals. It could eventually revive the once active and busy jailbreaking community that was just recently on the verge of extinction.AdChoices广告How long this favorable, at least for hackers, situation will last is anyone’s guess. For one, there is no assurance that this is even near the iOS 11 version of iBoot. Apple could also take swift action to plug up whatever holes there are left. Since everything is obscured behind a veil of secrecy, hackers and researchers will still be working in uncertainty. But at least that work may have now become just a bit easier.VIA: Vice Apple’s walled garden is partly made possible through its closed, proprietary software. While Microsoft has made a U-turn on its stance on Linux and open source in general, Apple remains steadfast in embracing a “security through obscurity” philosophy. That stance, however, will soon be put to the test now that a critical piece of software used to secure Apple’s devices has now been leaked on the Internet in a very big way. Source code for Apple’s iBoot bootloader has been posted on GitHub, potentially opening the doors for hackers and security researches to more easily break into iPhones.last_img read more
