Common And The National Park Foundation Bring New Orleans Jazz National Historical

first_imgOn June 11, 2016, the National Park Service and the National Park Foundation will partner with Common to host the second event in the organizations’ Park Exchange Series, bringing the musical experience of New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park to Chicago. The public is invited to join the celebration of the National Park Service’s 100th anniversary in this innovative exchange that will highlight the diversity of park experiences and the breadth of our National Park System. This exchange is part of the #FindYourPark/#EncuentraTuParque centennial celebration for the National Park Service. For each of the three Park Exchange events, a national park experience is conveyed to – or exchanged with – one of America’s urban centers. For Chicago’s Park Exchange, a New Orleans second line will swing from one musically rich city to another.“Chicago and New Orleans are two culturally diverse cities with rich histories in music and I’m honored that the National Park Service and National Park Foundation invited me to be a part of this experience,” said Common. “I grew up on the Southside of Chicago and think the second line will be an especially meaningful and wonderful tradition for our community. I hope this event will inspire people to find their park.”The heart of a second line is its ability to unite communities and encourage them to join the festivities, offering a unique opportunity for the Southside neighborhood of Chicago to experience the culture celebrated at a national park in Louisiana: New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park.On June 11th, Common will serve as Honorary Grand Marshall for the Park Exchange celebration and will kick off the second line celebration through Washington Park joined by the National Park Foundation, the National Park Service, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and New Orleans’s Treme Brass Band and Black Men of Labor. (Note: Common will not be performing during the celebration). Chicagoans are invited to join the festivities at the entrance of 57th Street and MLK Drive at 11:30 AM CDT.The celebration, which is free and open to the public, will include: • Opening Remarks with Common, Will Shafroth (President of the National Park Foundation), Peggy O’Dell (Deputy Director of the National Park Service) • Second line jazz festival through the city of Chicago at 12:00 PM CDT with NPF, NPS, Treme Brass Band and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble • Interactive stations from National Park Foundation Find Your Park/Encuentra Tu Parque Partners: ◦ The Coleman Company who will have a merchandise vignette centered around our National Park Foundation commemorative line, a giant blow up 20’ lantern, Coleman lawn games, and other fun giveaways. ◦ Humana who will demonstrate how spending time in a national, state or local community park can benefit your physical and mental well being. Through the use of 360 virtual reality technology, Humana will transport you to the rugged rock formations of Joshua Tree and into the giant, ancient Sequoia forests of Yosemite. The breathtaking views will inspire you to find your park and embrace the great things ahead, as you start a journey towards renewed health. ◦ Subaru of America who will be on-site to raise awareness of its National Park Zero-Landfill Initiative, an effort to significantly reduce waste going into landfills from all national parks. Attendees will be able to enjoy a variety of interactive activities and learn how they can help and of course win prizes. In addition to the Chicago-New Orleans music theme, the event will also engage rangers from one of our nation’s newest national parks, Pullman National Monument in Chicago. Pullman rangers will be on hand to talk about the park and its ongoing development.“Most people know that the National Park Service preserves amazing landscapes, but the Park Exchange event series demonstrates that we care for America’s cultural and historic treasures, too,” said National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis. “New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park and Pullman National Monument are just two of the many parks where visitors can experience our nation’s rich and diverse cultural heritage. We especially hope that the series will help young people discover what national parks can mean to them.”The Chicago and New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park Exchange is the second event in the series, which is designed to bring parks to life in urban areas and demonstrate the diversity of park experiences. In May, the National Park Service and National Park Foundation brought the iconic redwood trees to the city of Austin, Texas to juxtapose the nature of Redwood National and State Parks in California against the architecture of the iconic University of Texas Tower, which soars high at 307 feet above Austin, the average height of a redwood tree. In August, the Park Exchange event series will culminate in New York City, taking the innovation from Thomas Edison National Historical Park in a small New Jersey town, to the iconic big city skyline.“A park experience can be many things that can transform lives and shape minds. That is what we’re creating with the Park Exchange event series,” said Will Shafroth, president of the National Park Foundation, the official charity of America’s national parks. “Through this unique exchange, we are opening up a whole new world of discovery as people experience first-hand how parks are so much more than grass and trees. Parks can be music, community, and culture.”The Park Exchange event series is part of the Find Your Park/Encuentra Tu Parque movement, which was launched in March 2015 by the National Park Service and the National Park Foundation to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the National Park Service. Inspiring people from all backgrounds to celebrate and support America’s national parks and community-based programs, #FindYourPark invites people to discover and share their own unique connections to our nation’s natural landscapes, vibrant culture, and rich history. Some of the most admired companies in the world are supporting the National Park Foundation’s efforts for #FindYourPark, including American Express, Budweiser, Subaru, REI, Humana and Disney. Additional partners include Coleman and Coca-Cola.A calendar of events taking place across the country to celebrate the National Park Service Centennial can be found at read more

Campaigning ends with CM’s roadshow

first_imgKolkata: Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee’s three roadshows on Kolkata’s streets on the last day of campaign for the final phase of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, just hours before the Election Commission’s campaign ban kicks in at 10 pm, witnessed tremendous response from her party workers and the common people alike.Hundreds lined up on both the sides of the streets as the first roadshow hit Diamond Harbour (DH) Road on a hot Thursday afternoon after it kick-started from Thakurpukur 3A bus stand. People tried to get a closer look at the charismatic leader giving her security personnel and police a tough time. Roadshows were conducted in favour of Mala Roy and Mimi Chakraborty contesting with Trinamool Congress’ tickets from South Kolkata and Jadavpur respectively. King Mohammed VI Lays Foundation Stone of Psycho-Social Rehabilitation Center in…

Rabat – King Mohammed VI laid the foundation stone of a psycho-social rehabilitation center at the Ibn Rochd University Hospital in Casablanca on Saturday. The center is a solidarity-based project illustrating the special interest of the Sovereign in promoting the health sector in general and mental health in particular. The MAD 14 million project, initiated by the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity, reinforces the momentum of cohesion and mutual assistance generated by the National Solidarity Campaign, which runs from March 15-25.It falls under the umbrella of the action plan of the Foundation and aims to support the national health sector. It will accomplish this by strengthening the existing medical supply and improving access to health care for the poorest population. It will also integrate a complementary social approach into the mechanisms of the patients and beneficiaries involved. The future center is an integral part of the Casablanca-Settat regional medico-social program (2016-2020), supported by the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity. Its purpose will be to take care of patients with serious and chronic psychological and mental illnesses, with a view to reducing the deleterious effects of these conditions and then promote their social and professional reintegration. It will allow treated patients, estimated at more than 1,300 a year, to break with the isolation caused by mental pathology, by promoting the development of their relational abilities, the acquisition of some professional skills and an improved feeling of well-being.Built on a covered area of 1,820 m2, the psycho-social rehabilitation center will be housed within the Ibn Rochd University Psychiatric Centre and will include a therapeutic center, a socio-educational center, an administrative center and a reception area. read more

Its lit SmithSchuster steps into spotlight for Steelers

PITTSBURGH — JuJu Smith-Schuster wants to get something straight. That 4.52-second 40-yard dash the Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver ran at the combine in the spring of 2017? It was a blessing, even if it didn’t feel like it at the time.A fraction faster and Smith-Schuster knows he likely goes higher than the 62nd overall pick in the draft and the chance to catch passes from Ben Roethlisberger and learn alongside Antonio Brown on a team with perennial and legitimate Super Bowl aspirations never materializes. So if Smith-Schuster had to wear the label of being “slow” for a few weeks, so be it.“That was the biggest thing for me coming out of college like ‘He doesn’t have breakaway speed, he doesn’t have breakaway speed,’” Smith-Schuster said Thursday. “But like C’mon. You’ve seen what I’ve been doing.”It’s kind of hard to miss. The 22-year-old leads the Steelers (7-3-1) in receptions (77) and yards receiving (1,055) heading into Sunday’s visit from the Los Angeles Chargers (8-3), including a 97-yard catch-and-run for a score last week against Denver, tying his own record for the longest grab in franchise history set last year against Detroit.Smith-Schuster ran underneath a rainbow from Roethlisberger, pulled away from Chris Harris Jr. and stiff-armed Darian Stewart to the ground with one thought running through his mind.“Every time I break away with those (long) touchdowns I always say . I’m not going to say the word, but I always say ‘Combine, what? What was the combine for?’” Smith-Schuster said.Apparently, not much.Though Smith-Schuster’s enthusiastic and decidedly physical approach to blocking — one head coach Mike Tomlin likened to former Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward — initially earned him the respect of his teammates as a rookie, he’s spent most of his second season becoming more than just a complement to Brown but a legitimate and dependable big-time threat in his own right. When the Steelers were desperately trying to rally from a 16-point deficit in Jacksonville two weeks ago, Smith-Schuster’s leaping 35-yard grab down the sideline on Pittsburgh’s final drive helped set up the game-winning touchdown. It was the same against the Broncos. Roethlisberger hit Smith-Schuster for a pair of 19-yard gains on the Steelers’ last possession and on first-and-goal at the Denver 3, Roethlisberger didn’t look to Brown but to Smith-Schuster. The pass to the corner of the end zone was too long, and two plays later Roethlisberger was intercepted in the end zone while trying to thread a pass to Brown. After the 24-17 loss the quarterback admitted he wished he’d looked for Smith-Schuster on every snap and chastised Brown for running the wrong route, suggesting the “WiFi” connection — Brown’s description for his relationship with Roethlisberger — between one of the most productive quarterback/receiver combinations in NFL history is on the fritz.Smith-Schuster understands it lends itself to an easy narrative that the torch is in the process of being passed. He insists that’s hardly the case. It’s Brown, not Smith-Schuster, frequently drawing double teams. It’s Brown, not Smith-Schuster, who remains Roethlisberger’s favourite target. And it’s Brown — who is co-starring with Smith-Schuster in a series of Pizza Hut commercials — who is on a potentially Hall of Fame career path.“It’s hard, you know?” Smith-Schuster said. “But (Brown) still makes his plays and he still has the explosive plays that he’s making. And for me to be a young guy, just like me and James (Washington) and some of the other guys … we are able to eat off his plate because of what he’s done in the past.”And in the present. The 30-year-old Brown is on pace to extend his NFL-record streak of consecutive seasons with at least 100 receptions to six even with the increased attention from opposing defences. While Smith-Schuster allows he plays a position known for producing divas, he has no plans on becoming one creating any sort of “me or him” scenario with Brown.“If you are asking if there’s a problem between me and AB or any of the other guys, that’s not happening,” Smith-Schuster said. “Obviously we are trying to strive for one goal.”The only goal by which every season in Pittsburgh is measured. The Steelers lead the AFC North heading into December and are on track for a fifth straight playoff berth. Yet Pittsburgh hasn’t reached the Super Bowl since 2010 and while Smith-Schuster is all for expanding his “global brand” — look no further than his rapidly rising endorsement deals or his forever busy Instagram page for proof — he knows all the yards, all the touchdowns and GIF-able celebrations that ensue won’t amount to much if the Steelers don’t reach the Super Bowl.“All of this doesn’t matter if you don’t win it all,” he said.Something Pittsburgh can do if Brown and Smith-Schuster continue to develop into arguably the best wide receiver combination in the league. They’re getting close if they’re not already there, and they know it.“When it comes to game day, it’s all we talk about,” Smith-Schuster said. “(We say) ‘It’s GOAT time. It’s time the GOAT comes alive.’ You make your plays, on both sides. And we’ve seen it work.”Will Graves, The Associated Press read more

Cincinnati Bengals head to Buffalo looking for first road win of season

Cleveland Browns defensive back Buster Skrine, right, trips up Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Jermaine Gresham at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio, on Sunday, September 29, 2013. The Browns won, 17-6. Credit: Courtesy of MCTThe Cincinnati Bengals (3-2) head to Buffalo to face the Bills Sunday hoping to carry over momentum gained last week in a victory over the Patriots. They will face a Buffalo team that features the league’s third best rushing attack but has lost its starting quarterback, E.J. Manuel to a knee injury. The Bengals’ defense rose to new heights in a 13-6 victory against the New England Patriots. Despite being without defensive end Michael Johnson and cornerback Leon Hall, Cincinnati stifled New England’s pass attack, sacking quarterback Tom Brady four times and breaking his streak of 52 straight games with a touchdown pass. This week’s task are expected to be much easier.Just when it seemed the Bills (2-3) had finally resolved their problems at quarterback, they were dealt a major setback. Manuel had been having an impressive rookie season his first four games before the injury. After losing in the final seconds in week one to the Patriots, the Bills had gone 2-1, including a win over the Panthers in which Manuel threw a touchdown pass with five seconds left.Last week, the Bills were tied with the Browns, 17-17, when Manuel went down in the third quarter. They would go on to lose to Cleveland 37-24. Backup Jeff Tuel struggled in relief against the Browns, prompting the team to announce that Thad Lewis will make only the second start of his career against the Bengals. It can be presumed that the plan for the Bills is to limit Lewis’ exposure against Cincinnati’s defensive line. The fourth year quarterback will primarily be asked to hand off to running backs Fred Jackson (309 yards rushing, four touchdowns) and C.J. Spiller (296 yards rushing, one touchdown). With only twelve points in their last two games, Cincinnati’s offense is struggling behind inconsistent quarterback, Andy Dalton.Cincinnati, meanwhile, will try to get their first win of the year on the road where they play significantly worse than they do at home. Two weeks ago in Cleveland, Cincinnati allowed inexperienced Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer to look comfortable in the pocket, a far cry from the pressure applied on Brady last Sunday. The defense has only caused one turnover in two road games compared with eight turnovers in three games at home. But a win against a Patriots team that had been 4-0 may have provided the defense with the confidence needed to maintain focus away from Cincinnati and to overwhelm Lewis and the Bills. read more

Womens Volleyball Ana Beatriz Franklin and Vanja Bukilic bring cultures to the

Ohio State freshman opposite hitter Vanja Buklic (13) spikes the ball while team watches on Sunday, Oct. 14 at St. John’s Arena in Columbus, Ohio. Ohio State beat Michigan State in 3 matches. Credit: Claire Kudika | Assistant Design EditorAna Beatriz Franklin and Vanja Bukilic traveled long distances to play volleyball at Ohio State.Franklin’s Brazilian and Bukilic’s Serbian influences have merged their cultures and volleyball techniques among them and their teammates. From the way they drink their coffee to the way they behave on the court, the players had some adjustments to make upon joining Ohio State’s team. Both Franklin, a junior outside hitter, and Bukilic, a freshman opposite hitter, came from countries that do not offer college volleyball opportunities. It’s volleyball or education. This did not satisfy the desires of the two then-high school students. “It was really important to me to get a good education,” Franklin said. “I knew I wanted to keep playing volleyball at a really high level and I wanted to get my degree and go to college so coming here to play in the Big Ten was a win-win.”It was a win-win for the team as well. Franklin leads the team in service aces with 23 this season. Bukilic leads the team in kills with 240. Both girls had a similar decision to make when it came to leaving their home countries and moving to the United States. It was the same aspect of the team that drew them to this program rather than any other team they were being recruited for: team chemistry. “I decided to come here right when I visited,” Bukilic said. “There was always a good atmosphere. We were all just hanging out and it was fun being with them. The chemistry and coaches are the main reason I came.”Head coach Geoff Carlston traveled internationally to welcome both girls to the team and ease their nerves about leaving home to come to Ohio State. “Once I met the girls and the coaching staff, I knew it was the right place for me,” Franklin said. “Geoff went to Brazil to recruit me and he met my family which meant a lot and once I got here to campus, I just knew.”Carlston was the only volleyball coach from the United States who went to Brazil during the recruitment process. FloVolleyball, an international volleyball news organization, ranked Brazil as the No. 1 volleyball country, with the United States ranked No. 2.Styles of volleyball vary across the world. The basic rules, positions and terminology are consistent, but everything else was an adjustment for Franklin and Bukilic. “First when I came, it was hard because there is a completely different system for everything,” Bukilic said. “The style of playing is different, it is a faster game here and a lot of substitutions with the front and back row. It was hard at the beginning, but now I just got used to it.” Franklin noticed a difference in other ways. “Here, it’s a lot more physical, but at home, it’s a lot more technical,” she said. “I think it made me a better player, having to adapt a lot and change to fit the game here.”Culturally, Ohio was a whole new world. Aside from the stereotypical cornfields and cows that everyone expects when moving to the Midwest, the girls faced cultural adjustments that took more time getting used to. “People always bring coffee with them here,” Bukilic said. “At home you sit down, have a cup of coffee, talk with friends; but it’s busy life here and everything is so fast. I like it but sometimes I need to just sit and enjoy the moment.”Without visas, Bukilic’s family is not able to come to the United States to watch her in action. She mentioned YouTube as a go-to site for her family to watch her play.Bukilic plans to return to Serbia to play professional volleyball after graduation. Franklin is less certain of her future, both with volleyball and life. “I really try to stay in the moment and take one day at a time,” Franklin said. “There are a lot of great opportunities here and I would love to stay involved with OSU after graduation, but it’s hard to know. I still have two years left and there’s a lot of water to go under the bridge.” read more

Opposition seeking answers on Govts unlawful use of Special Prosecutors Nandlall

The questions are derived from the fact that estimates show $109 million being allocated to the Attorney General’s Chambers in the 2017 Budget under programme 523.In addition, Nandlall contends that in the 2018 Budget, undisclosed funds were allocated for hiring special prosecutors, including foreign lawyers. He is therefore seeking answers on this issue.“Could the honourable Minister provide this House with information on the number of special prosecutors that have been hired, their salaries and benefits, travel and hotel costs, etc, incurred and the number of cases they have been handling for the period January 2017 to March 2018?” Nandlall questioned the State. In an interview with this publication, Nandlall stressed the implications for the State’s involvement in retaining special prosecutors on a scale of this magnitude. In the first place, he pointed out that this practise is not supported by the law.“It is absolutely unlawful for (the State) to be paying special prosecutors. Since 1966, when we became independent, the prosecutorial functions of the State were taken away from the Attorney General office and given to an agency called the Director of Public Prosecutions.”Attorney General & Minister of Legal Affairs Basil Williams“That agency is an independent agency and it ought not to be influenced in the discharge of those functions. Government has no role to play in the prosecution of criminal offences. That is not a function of the Government but the State agency.”The former Attorney General also noted that while serious offences like drug trafficking and murder are being prosecuted by Police prosecutor, the State shells out millions to prosecute members of the former Administration and perceived Opposition supporters on charges that are not even in violation of criminal laws.“Millions of dollars are expended to hire special prosecutors. And these special prosecutors are hired to prosecute us,” Nandlall noted. “They are not hiring special prosecutors to prosecute the serious offences being committed every day in this country, like robbery, murder, piracy, drug trafficking. These are the real ills of the society. So the public will judge whether that is the best use of taxpayers’ money. It had been reported that Cabinet appointed six Attorneys; Michael Somersall, Hewely Griffith, Lawrence Harris, Patrice Henry, Compton Richardson, and Trenton Lake as Special Prosecutors in the event that legal action might ensue from audit reports into the Pradoville 2 Housing Scheme and the 2007 World Cup cricket, among others.Attorney General Williams has long contended that nothing is wrong with Government’s move to hire special prosecutors to go after ‘State assets’ as similar situations existed in Guyana before.Williams had also highlighted that Government’s rationale for hiring special prosecutors was because the State prosecutors under the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) were uncomfortable with handling such cases. read more

Court upholds Berlusconis tax fraud sentence seven years after trial first started

first_imgAN ITALIAN COURT has upheld a tax fraud conviction for former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, confirming his sentence of one year in prison and a five-year ban from public office.“The court confirms the sentence against Silvio Berlusconi,” a judge in Milan said in a live audio feed broadcast by news channel Sky TG 24.Berlusconi is now expected to appeal the ruling in Italy’s highest court, which would suspend the punishment pending a final ruling in the case which revolves around his Mediaset business empire. The initial trial began seven years ago, highlighting delays in Italy’s justice system.People of Freedom party“We knew it would go like this,” Berlusconi’s defence lawyer Niccolo Ghedini told reporters.“I do not think there is a connection between this verdict and political stability,” said Ghedini, who is also a member of parliament from Berlusconi’s People of Freedom party.Berlusconi’s party won nearly a third of the vote in a general election in February and is now an influential member of a newly-formed grand coalition led by leftist moderate Enrico Letta. The cabinet is already riven with tensions and political analysts warn Berlusconi could bring down the government within months as opinion polls indicate that he would win fresh elections.Berlusconi’s former education minister Mariastella Gelmini said the ruling was “incomprehensible” and Renato Schifani, a pro-Berlusconi senator, said it reflected an ongoing “judicial persecution”.BillionaireThe appeal verdict was the latest twist in a 20-year legal saga that began when the flamboyant billionaire first burst onto the political scene.Berlusconi rarely if ever shows up at trials and is not obliged to under Italian law, although he has made occasional declarations to the court without cross-examination as the system allows. The case revolves around prices of film distribution rights bought by Mediaset that were artificially inflated in order to avoid taxes. The court acquitted Berlusconi’s business associate Fedele Confalonieri, the current chairman of Mediaset.Sex trialBerlusconi is also a defendant in a trial for having sex with an underage 17-year-old prostitute while he was still prime minister, and then abusing the powers of his office by putting pressure on police to release her from custody.A verdict in that case is expected imminently. The 76-year-old Berlusconi was also convicted in March over the publication of police wiretap transcripts in a newspaper he owns, which were leaked in order to discredit a political rival. He is appealing that conviction.Berlusconi has been found guilty before but all his convictions have either been overturned on appeal or have expired under a statute of limitations.Supporters and Berlusconi himself say he is unfairly victimised by left-wing judges who are out to get him, but critics say he has used his influence and wealth to dodge the law.Potential biasGhedini said the tax fraud trial should have been moved to another city – a defence request that was turned down– because judges in Milan were biased.Even if his convictions are upheld throughout the appeals process, Berlusconi is unlikely ever to see the inside of a prison cell as sentencing guidelines for over-70s in Italy are lenient.- © AFP, 2013Read: Italian court confirms Berlusconi ally guilty in mafia case >last_img read more

first_imgWASHINGTON — The Senate Judiciary Committee approved legislation Thursday making gun trafficking a federal crime as lawmakers cast the first vote in Congress to curb firearms since December’s horrific shootings at a Connecticut elementary school. The panel was also debating bills banning assault weapons and high capacity magazines, requiring background checks for nearly all gun purchases, and providing more money for schools to buy video cameras and other safety equipment. The committee approved the gun trafficking measure on an 11-7 vote. Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, was the only Republican to vote in favor of the measure, whose chief sponsor was the panel’s chairman, Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt.Evidence was abundant of partisan clashes ahead as the two parties sparred over the need to limit firearms.Leahy said he hoped senators would make significant progress this week on curbing gun violence.Grassley said everyone wants to prevent more killings like the deaths of 20 first-graders and six staffers at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. But he said gun control does not work and accused Democrats of wanting to “impose more gun restrictions on law-abiding citizens.”All four measures were expected to pass the committee. But their fate when the full Senate considers them, probably in April, is less certain. The trafficking measure by Leahy, D-Vt., was thought to have the best prospects, while the assault weapons ban by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., seemed to have the slimmest chance.last_img read more

Hyderabad Brews Tata Starbucks Expands to Sixth City in India

first_imgTata Starbucks Limited, a 50-50 joint venture between Starbucks Coffee Company of US and Tata Global Beverages, on Tuesday expanded its operations to the sixth city in India by opening its flagship store in Hyderabad. The store has come up in upmarket Jubilee Hills and is the first in Hyderabad and the 58th in India.Tata Starbucks CEO Avani Davda said the store, designed in tune with the city’s history and culture, is consistent with their long-term strategy to strengthen the presence in South India. She told reporters that the company will soon open another store in the city.In nearly two years since Tata Starbucks was launched, it has opened stores in Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Pune, Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad.Tuesday saw the launch of three stores in Bangalore and Hyderabad. She said the company is excited over the way it is growing but declined to give any numbers with regard to the target.”In last 10 weeks we have opened eight stores. It demonstrates our ambition for growth in India,” she said. For Starbucks, which has presence in 60 countries, India will be one of the strongest markets in the coming days.Avani said they also have plans to open stores in tier-II cities. “We have over 50 cities are on our radar but we are first trying to understand what unique we can offer to these cities,” she said.”We are here to invest and grow the market in accordance to our brand standard,” she said while refusing to share investment numbers. She said the reward programme launched by the company six weeks ago showed that 40,000 customers have come back and this has given the confidence.last_img read more

Bhasan Char to be like prison if Rohingyas shifted HRW

first_imgSatellite image time series of Bhasan Char camp development (October 2017 – March 2018). — Courtesy: HRWMyanmar’s Rohingyas, who are currently staying in camps in Cox’s Bazar, may be isolated and suffer for lack of access to education and healthcare services, if they are taken to Bhasan Char, says Human Rights Watch (HRW).Bhasan Char is a tiny island in the Bay of Bengal, made of accumulated silt.HRW’s Brad Adams wrote, although Bangladeshi authorities say there will be no forced relocations, there is little evidence that any of the refugees would be willing to move there.“Bhashan Char will be like a prison,” Adams quoted a local journalist as saying.Referring to humanitarian aid groups’ concern about refugee health and safety in the Cox’s Bazar settlement, the HRW official said isolating them on Bhasan Char, with likely limited access to education and health services, could be even more problematic. In the article, Adams mentioned that Bangladesh authorities say they will soon start relocating over 100,000 Rohingya refugees to Bhasan Char. This is, he quoted officials as arguing, necessary to reduce pressure on the world’s largest refugee settlement in Cox’s Bazar, where nearly 1.2 million Rohingya have fled to escape military atrocities in Myanmar. The island is said to have been secured with embankments, and the homes and cyclone shelters are said to be better than anything available to millions of Bangladeshis.”But they have yet to provide convincing assurances that the refugees will be safe there, and their freedom of movement and right to livelihood protected,” Adams added. He also quoted residents from nearby Hatiya Island as saying part of Bhasan Char is ‘eroded by the monsoon every year’.“In that time, we never dare go to that island, so how will thousands of Rohingya live there?”Adams pointed out that when Yanghee Lee, the United Nations special rapporteur on Myanmar, warned that an ill-planned relocation would have the “potential to create a new crisis,” the government said resettling the Rohingya is an internal matter.Minister AKM Mozammel Haq reportedly blamed nongovernmental organisations for highlighting safety and sustainability concerns.”Dumping a battered and traumatized people on Bhasan Char to face yet another threat to their survival is not a solution,” Adams said adding that Bangladesh should terminate the relocation plans unless or until independent experts determine that the island is suitable, and until the government ensures that refugees who consent to relocate there will be allowed freedom of movement on and off the island.last_img read more

Rather than relying on customized reports and templates that can limit flexibility and create a dependence on others, this approach puts access and control in the hands of the decision maker. With declining reimbursement making improved operational, clinical and billing efficiency an imperative, radiology administrators and radiologists alike must find tools to identify and easily monitor relevant key performance indicators. “Rapid access to meaningful information enables administrators to maximize time spent leveraging information, rather than collecting it, while more demanding quality reporting and pay-for-performance requirements make data mining a necessity,” said William Boonn, M.D., president, Montage Healthcare Solutions. For more information: FacebookTwitterLinkedInPrint分享 News | Artificial Intelligence | August 05, 2019 Montefiore Nyack Hospital Uses Aidoc AI to Spot Urgent Conditions Faster Montefiore Nyack Hospital, an acute care hospital in Rockland County, N.Y., announced it is utilizing artificial… read more The CT scanner might not come with protocols that are adequate for each hospital situation, so at Phoenix Children’s Hospital they designed their own protocols, said Dianna Bardo, M.D., director of body MR and co-director of the 3D Innovation Lab at Phoenix Children’s. Antipoverty programs enjoy success but jobs would be better says UN

first_imgCosta Rica could reduce its poverty rate by 8.5 percent if all employers paid the legal minimum wage and poor families could find work, according to a new report from the United Nations Development Program released Monday.Social programs, including non-contributory cash transfers, have shown success combating poverty, but jobs are needed for significant long-term reductions in Costa Rica’s 20 percent poverty rate, argued the UNPD report’s authors. Costa Rica’s poverty rate has stagnated at roughly 20 percent of the population for the last 20 years, despite regular economic growth and a growing population. The report’s authors, investigators Pablo Sauma and Juan Digeo Trejos, said that non-contributory pensions, scholarships and assistance to poor families with children and cash transfers from the national welfare office, IMAS, reduced poverty by 2.9 percent for families living in extreme poverty, and 2.5 percent for poor families between 2000 and 2011. The researcher, however, stressed that these gains were based on receiving assistance from the government and did not represent long-term gains in the country’s fight to lower persistent levels of poverty. The investigators recommended Costa Rica pursue an enforcement policy that guarantees workers get what they’re owed and improve the productivity of small businesses.Unemployment was the most important factor for those living in extreme poverty. Costa Ricans living in extreme poverty have an unemployment rate of 36.7 percent, compared to 4.5 percent for those not living in poverty, according to the report.Sauma told The Tico Times that businesses are not hiring enough to start to close the 20 percent poverty gap in Costa Rica.“Costa Rica has grown at an average rate of 4.5 percent during the last 20 years. With average growth at just 4.5 percent, we can’t hope for more [reductions in poverty]. To lower the poverty rate we’d have to see growth over 6 percent,” Sauma told The Tico Times. Many poor Ticos who do work, don’t make the minimum wage. Over 67 percent of the poor here make less than the minimum wage. The figure jumps to 87.3 percent for those in extreme poverty. Many poor Costa Ricans work in the informal sector (65.6 percent), where they do not receive health insurance or other benefits. Over 91 percent of these informal jobs involve unskilled labor.UNDP Resident Representative Yoriko Yasukawa said the coffee-producing country should better focus its famous social assistance programs and work toward universal coverage for public services like education. The UNDP representative noted that some 24,000 children who should be in primary school are not. This number has slightly increase during the last decade, according to investigators.“It’s important that Costa Rica continue strengthening the impact of its social programs, even more so for a country that has demonstrated a commitment to the rights of the less fortunate, principally in education, health and social assistance,” Yasukawa said. Fire safeguards stricter than ever before

first_imgBy sheer coincidence, only two days before the June 14 Grenfell Tower fire in London, MPs here were wrapping up discussion of new fire safety regulations for buildings. And this past Friday, the House plenum voted through the new regulations. Known as the Fire Protection Code of Practice, the 400-page document was inserted into the Streets and Buildings Law, the main law regulating the construction of all building and civil engineering works. In an emailed response to a Sunday Mail query, Kyriacos Kouros, acting head of the Technical Services at the interior ministry, explained that the updated regulations are the result of meticulous work by the Technical Chamber of Cyprus (Etek) in collaboration with the Fire Department. The key purpose of the amendments, Kouros said, is to make sure that buildings are designed in a way ensuring that, in the event of a blaze, they can preserve their static resistance for a certain period of time.In addition, implementation of the new statutory regs aims to minimise the cause of the fire and contain the spread of fire and smoke, both inside the affected building as well as to adjacent structures. There are also enhanced provisions relating to escape routes and modes of ensuring that rescue teams can operate without facing immediate danger. In the wake of the disaster at the Grenfell tower block, revelations of shortcomings in construction methods have been coming hard and fast. Inadequate fireproof testing of materials (the now infamous cladding) and the absence of sprinklers in the high-rise are just some of the reveals. But according to Polys Hadjivasileiou, assistant chief fire officer, fire safety standards in Cyprus are quite strict and in no way lag behind the rest of Europe.“We inherited stringent practices from the time of British colonial rule, and over the years we’ve updated them with best practices from across Europe, from countries like Germany and others.”In fact, Hadjivasileiou points out, from his understanding standards in Britain have waned over the years.“Perhaps Grenfell might never have happened had the British, who in the past used to have excellent standards, not become lax.”Asked whether during the discussions of the new regulations stakeholders discovered any major deficiencies in the local fire protection regime, Hadjivasileiou said no.The previous regulations were already very satisfactory and covered all the bases, he added. The updated ordnances mostly relate to changing the method of doing things from now on.For example, previously the task of certifying a building’s fire safety fell on the Fire Department. The architect or civil engineer would furnish the Fire Department with the plans, which the department would study and give its stamp of approval – or not. The department’s observations were mandatory on the architect and were incorporated into the terms of the building permit issued subsequently. Now, under the new regulations, it is the architect/civil engineer who is responsible for carrying out the fire safety study. All such architects must be certified by Etek. And as in the past, the study is still sent on to the Fire Department for review.Hadjivasileiou thinks this is a positive change, putting additional pressure on architects and engineers to comply with fire safety standards. Moreover, where necessary the Fire Protection Code of Practice may now be tweaked or amended by ministerial decree, making the system more flexible.Asked about requirements for such things as wet risers and sprinklers in high-rise buildings, the officer said these are already extant.Wet risers are used to supply water within buildings for fire-fighting purposes. The provision of a built-in water distribution system means that fire-fighters do not need to create their own distribution system in order to fight a fire and avoids the breaching of fire compartments by running hose lines between them. Wet risers are permanently charged with water.Even under current practice, said Hadjivasileiou, wet risers are installed in buildings that are over 30 metres tall. The hoses used by the department’s fire-fighting platforms are 30 metres long but can be extended beyond that. However, anything beyond that length poses a problem of adequate pressure from the pumps – hence the need for wet risers in the buildings. Also, current practice in Cyprus provides for an extra stairwell in office buildings (but not for residential blocks) that are six storeys and above.Occupancy is the chief criterion for an additional staircase. Office blocks are designated as high-occupancy, hence the requirement for an extra escape route.Asked whether a major building fire in Cyprus has ever been attributed to unsuitable or faulty construction materials, Hadjivasileiou said he could not recall such a case.On this point, the interior ministry said Cyprus is in line with EU Regulation No 305/2011 laying down harmonised conditions for the marketing of construction products. In order for construction materials to be made available in the European market, they must comply with EU standards, be accompanied by a Declaration of Performance and bear the CE marking.Eleni Mavrou, chair of the House interior committee which reviewed the new regulations, said their preparation had nothing to do with the terrible events in London.“But when the tragedy did happen, just two days after we finished discussing our regulations here, I thought to myself: ‘You never know what happens…better safe than sorry’.”As to whether cladding is used in Cyprus, Mavrou said that from a cursory investigation into the matter it does not appear that such materials are used in buildings here. The ONE residential apartment block in Limassol will stand 170 metres tall and have 37 floorsBut a major limitation of the updated fire safety regulations is that they do not apply to already existing buildings or those under construction and for which a building permit has been issued. The only exception is that, where restoration work is to be done on existing buildings, the updated regulations apply.Asked why the omission, Mavrou hinted only that it was due to legal complications. She conceded this might be an issue, for instance, with the series of skyscrapers now being built in Limassol. The permits for these high-rises were issued under the old regulations. But the fire department’s Hadjivasileiou insisted that in practice this is no cause for concern.“Again, our previous regulations and standards were robust. Everything was already in place to ensure the best possible fire safety,” he offered. You May LikeFigLeaf Beta AppHow to Become Fully Anonymous Online in Less Than 3 Minutes?
