Drivers in Canadian province will lose license pay 5000 fine for illegally

first_img(WSVN) – Drivers who illegally pass a school bus when its stop lights are flashing will lose their license for three months, according to a new law on the books in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island.CBC News reports the Prince Edward Island legislature passed the law in response to a number of incidents of children getting hit or nearly getting hit while getting on and off school buses.Failure to stop for a school bus now means the driver will get 12 points on their license, and have it suspended for three months. Offenders will also have to pay a $5,000 fine.In order to get their licenses reinstated, drivers must meet with highway safety officials, pay a $100 reinstatement fee, and take a defensive driving course within six months of getting their license back.If the driver gets any more points on their license within a year of the initial offense, their license will once again be suspended. The law goes into effect Saturday, December 8th. According to CBC News, the province’s increased fines are the highest in the country.Copyright 2019 Sunbeam Television Corp. All rights reserved. HP Reverb gives Microsoft VR a highres boost

first_imgIan Sherr gives the HP Reverb a spin in San Francisco. James Martin/CNET Virtual reality headsets are going through a hardware evolution, slowly, with eye tracking, wireless connections, wider fields of view and higher resolutions.Companies are also catering their VR headsets to enterprise over consumer more now than they were a few years ago, when Oculus Rift and Vive were trying to win home crowds. The HP Reverb is a case in point: The first new Windows VR headset in years is going for professionals more than everyday consumers, with a $600 price tag and a focus on comfort and higher definition. An enterprise-targeted version of the HP Reverb will cost slightly more, at $649.The HP Reverb arrives in late April. I tried one on and experienced a series of demos to see how it compared to the extremely impressive (and expensive) Varjo VR-1, which I demoed earlier this year. But, keep in mind the Varjo VR-1 costs $6,000: the Reverb is one tenth the price.hp-reverb-vr-virtual-reality-headset-7972The HP Reverb’s size is Oculus Rift-like. James Martin/CNET How high-res is high-res?Compared to the current highest-res mainstream VR headsets (the HTC Vive Pro and Samsung Odyssey), the HP Reverb looks crisper. I tried one on right after wearing Samsung Odyssey, and it felt like an optician had adjusted my vision a notch better. That being said, I could still see pixels. Standing at a fixed point in a virtual room and trying to read text on a virtual Windows screen on the wall, it was a better experience with HP Reverb, but not as good as looking at a big, 4K monitor. The HP Reverb has 2,160×2,160 resolution per eye and a 114 degree field of view, both of which beat out other mainstream headsets (the Vive Pro is 1,440×1,600 per eye with a 110 degree field of view). HP’s headset uses 2.89-inch LCD displays over OLED to improve pixel density, and a new squircle-shaped field of view and asymmetrical Fresnel lenses to make the viewing area wider at the sides, and smaller between the eyes where viewing area overlaps. In terms of “pixels per degree,” or pixel density, the HP Reverb display is about 24 to 25 pixels per degree, versus 14 to 15 pixels per degree on the Vive Pro or Samsung Odyssey. In comparison, the Microsoft HoloLens 2 is 47 pixels per degree (with a considerably smaller field of view), and the Varjo VR-1 gets to over 60 pixels per degree at the center of its display.I tried several experiences: wandering around Microsoft’s virtual cliff house VR loft lobby, playing with SteamVR’s The Lab game and getting up close to virtual dragons and frogs, selecting surgical tools in a medical training program, and exploring a CAD design of a WeWork office, where I took a close peek at the texture of virtual pillows. It all looked pretty sharp, but it didn’t cross the “retina quality” threshold. I was more wowed by the Varjo VR-1, which had a pixel-free, perfect center resolution… but the Varjo headset also costs about $6,000. The HP Reverb does have other advantages, including a larger field of view, and the entire field is higher-res, while Varjo’s headset is lower res (about 15 pixels per degree) at the periphery. hp-reverb-vr-virtual-reality-headset-7885The HP Reverb uses Microsoft’s wireless VR controllers and similar self-contained in-headset tracking as previous hardware. James Martin/CNET One thing this headset lacks is eye tracking. The HP Reverb doesn’t have internal cameras to notice eye movement and gaze, something HTC is adding to the upcoming Vive Pro Eye, and which Varjo includes in its high-end headset. HP’s representatives had no comment on when an eye tracking version might appear. For now, HP is trying to get to the next VR stepping stone without driving up price too much on the Reverb… or its size. The headset feels more compact and a bit lighter than pro-targeted headsets I’ve worn (1.1 pounds, compared to the HTC Vive Pro’s 1.22 pounds), and about the same feel as the Oculus Rift headset (1.04 pounds). And it fit over my glasses fine. The Reverb is a Windows VR headset, and uses the same wireless controllers that existing Windows VR headsets use. Inside-out tracking contained in the headset doesn’t require room sensors, but it’s still tethered. The ability to link right into Windows 10 means it can also work with Steam-compatible VR games, too.The HP Reverb has its own built-in headphones, plus a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack, and has Bluetooth in-headset to allow controllers to wirelessly pair with it instead of the PC. The consumer version comes with a machine-washable foam face piece, while the enterprise model has a faster-to-wipe-clean leather face piece. Shaktoolik Erects Coastal Berm to Delay Relocation

first_imgFor years agency reports have listed Shaktoolik as eroding with immediate need for relocation. But without government funding, little action has been taken and erosion has progressed. Now the people of Shaktoolik are taking matters into their own hands and  building a coastal berm to protect their community.Listen now:The beginning of the Shaktoolik coastal berm. Photo: Anna Rose MacArthur.for years agency reports have listed Shaktoolik as eroding with immediate need for relocation. But without government funding, little action has been taken and erosion has progressed. Now the people of Shaktoolik are taking matters into their own hands and building a coastal berm to protect their community.A four-foot high pile of driftwood lines the coast of Shaktoolik. It stretches one mile from the first house to the dump. The barrier is the city’s first step in building a coastal berm, and it is the community’s first defense for fall storm surges.Harvey Sookikyak is one of the crew members constructing the berm. “If we try and wait for any kind of federal money, then it’s going to take more than a while to get this thing started,” he said, explaining the reason for the project. “So we decided it’s time for us to do something on our own.”Coordinating the project is Eugene Asicksik. He’s the Mayor of Shaktoolik and the Vice Chair of the Shaktoolik Native Corporation. “There has been a number of agencies that have come up with plans but there’s been no money to actually start,” Asickik said. Those plans include evacuation roads, evacuation centers, and even relocation.Over the years, Asicksik said a parade of government and private agencies have landed in the community to assess the erosion. He says they investigate, write a report, and leave. Two examples are in 2008 the state’s Immediate Action Workgroup released a report classifying Shaktoolik as one of eight communities in Alaska “in greatest peril due to climate change.” In 2009 the federal Government Accountability Office listed Shaktoolik as one of four Alaska communities “likely need[ing] to move all at once and as soon as possible” from continued flooding and erosion.“But again there is no money,” Asickik repeated. “That’s where we’ve taken initiative upon ourselves.”That initiative is building a coastal berm. Over the past two years the community has saved and raised money to build it: $120,000 from the Norton Sound Economic Development Corporation in community development funds and $500,000 from NSEDC in an outside entity grant.Asicksik said they are going to work until the money runs out— about three months. The funds will pay for labor, equipment, and fuel. It will not pay for an engineer.Instead, Shaktoolik is basing the berm’s design off a blueprint from the Department of Transportation. The DOT had intended to construct a vegetated berm in Shaktoolik as an experiment for other eroding communities. Shaktoolik lifted that design, just without the vegetation.“The money doesn’t allow it,” Asicksik said.DOT coastal engineers Harvey Smith and Ruth Carter drafted the design and support the community’s efforts.“They’re kind of taking our idea and making it happen in a bigger way than what we could do with our little grant,” Ruth Carter said when asked about the community’s self-engineering.The berm will consist of a driftwood pile, embedded with gravel, backed by a gravel mound. The materials come from the Shaktoolik coast.Though the community is paying to construct the berm, if the barrier gets damaged, the state or FEMA—the Federal Emergency Management Agency—might be responsible for repairing it.Jeremy Zidek is the Public Information Officer for the Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management and explained, “This berm, if it was owned by the city, it was properly engineered and maintained as a protective measure for the community, it can be eligible under public assistance program.”The berm’s construction is in its second week. To date, the workers have piled the driftwood and finished cutting a road to begin hauling the gravel.Gesturing to the berm’s beginning, Asicksik said, “Yes, we could just sit here and see what happens. But I can’t. I personally can’t. So in a way we are taking our own fate.”Asicksik said he does not know how long the berm will last. At best, he says the barrier will prevent a surge from cresting into the community. If anything, he said, it will buy the community time— time to remain in Shaktoolik or just time to escape the storm.last_img read more

Houston School Board Votes to Launch National Search for New Superintendent

first_img Listen “While I don’t agree with the search, it’s happening. And that is a reflection of some people’s communities wanting that to happen,” said Board President Rhonda Skillern-Jones. “So we will go forward and do that with fidelity. But I also feel the people who feel she is doing a good job were not served well today.”Jones said that next the board has to hash out what the search will look like with the firm, including details on a timeline. When the consultants were used previously, they conducted community listening sessions and the search lasted about five months. At a special meeting Thursday night, several parents urged the board to be transparent.“A promise has been made to all the people in (the Houston Independent School District) that you will be searching and looking for a superintendent. That means there should be an active process in which we do that,” said Mindy Wilson.Trustee Wanda Adams unsuccessfully tried to award the interim superintendent, Grenita Lathan, a one year contract while the search is ongoing.Adams said it was needed given the upcoming Texas legislative session and the need for “stability” in the district. Since she was tapped as interim, Lathan has overseen a difficult budget season and the turnaround of several long struggling schools. To embed this piece of audio in your site, please use this code: Share center_img 00:00 /00:49 Laura Isensee/Houston Public MediaAt a special meeting Thursday night, board members were mixed, but ultimately decided to conduct a national search for a new superintendent. It’s been six months since the last superintendent Richard Carranza left abruptly. Now the same firm that found him — Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates — will conduct a new national search. Because Carranza only lasted 18 months on the job before he left for New York City schools, there’ll be no search fee, just costs for incidentals like travel. Some trustees wanted to give the district’s interim superintendent, Grenita Lathan, a one-year contract until September 2019, while that search is ongoing. That measure was postponed indefinitely. Xlast_img read more

Gladiator 2 Moving Forward with Director Ridley Scott

first_imgIn the 2000 film Gladiator, as he stood defiantly in the Coliseum of Rome, a general turned slave named Maximus, portrayed by Russell Crowe, declared, “I will have my vengeance in this life or the next.” At the end of the film, Maximus lay dead in the dirt, but nonetheless that doesn’t prevent a next life for Gladiator, with Deadline Hollywood reporting that director Ridley Scott is developing a sequel to the film. It seems fairly certain Maximus will not return, but with Hollywood one can never be sure.Russell Crowe facing off against tiger in a scene from the film Gladiator (2000). Lucius idolized Maximus in the first film.Maximus is a fictional character, but Lucilla and Commodus are real people who lived in the 2nd century AD.She conspired against her despised brother, which was also a plot development in Gladiator, but in reality her coup attempt failed and she was executed. The problem is, Russell Crowe was considered central to the original’s success. In an interview several years ago quoted in The Sun, Ridley Scott said of Maximus, “I know how to bring him back. I was having this talk with the studio — ‘but he’s dead.’ There is a way of bringing him back. Whether it will happen, I don’t know.”Russell Crowe (seen here in 2012) received critical praise for his performance in ‘Gladiator’ and won the Academy Award for Best Actor. Photo by Eva Rinaldi CC BY-SA 2.0Crowe, in a different interview, said, “On the set of Gladiator I built up a relationship with [Scott] that would last forever. Ridley did a job that was both epic and magical.”The actor has also said that Maximus was one of his favorite characters. Before Scott and Crowe worked together on Gladiator, the director was best known for Alien, Blade Runner, and Thelma and Louise. He has said in interviews he wanted to make an epic that rose above the “Swords and Sandals” cliches.Ridley Scott on the set of Blade Runner. Reed, an alcoholic, died before the film was finished and a body double and CGI were employed to complete his key part. Richard Harris died in 2002.Gladiator was a box office smash, earning $460 million. It also kicked off more interest in films and books on the ancient world. Danish intelligence chief resigns before gun attack report

Five officers were also wounded in the attacks.Ahead of the event, the police agency had gauged that Vilks was not in any immediate danger. The artist, who has received numerous threats for depicting the Prophet Muhammad in cartoons, was likely the main target of the attack.Frederiksen described the agency and the police as “well-prepared and well-organized,” noting that it had identified the shooter within 12 hours of the first attack, but pointed out that officers weren’t posted outside the synagogue until nearly four hours after that attack.“That is too long,” she said. “It is obviously not satisfactory.
