Advertising, according to its sharper and grounded exponents has been defined as a profession that is single-mindedly engaged in the business of “creating wants and manufacturing needs.” Be that as it may, its criticality in today’s blatantly consumerist universe, however, remains more potent than ever and can never be ignored, overlooked or dismissed. After all, we live in a world where any and everything is up for sale. Taare Zameen ParUnlike yesterday, the bifurcation of readers, listeners and viewers has been brutally eliminated and dumped into one slot: consumers! Everything is target-specific and market-driven. Life is no longer about your ability or talent to write a book that’s an enjoyable read or create music that has charm and resonance — it’s all about whether (irrespective of your creative impulse) your output/creation/material has a market. If it doesn’t (but has potential) can that market be created?Once upon a time, films we made on the basis of stories, scripts, cast, directors etc. without fuss, hype or drama. There was a constituency for every genre of films — be it Bimal, Roy, Guru Dutt and Mehboob Khan type or the more commercial fare. Trade and film magazines carried announcements and newsbytes about casting and release dates and these were enough to arouse curiosity and generate excitement among the fans to prompt movement toward the neighboring, friendly movie theaters. It was a simple, innocent time when the number of films was limited, spaced out and the profile of the fans bordered on loyal, patient and easy-to-please. It was a relaxed and laid-back environment where the directors ruled. Script, stories, stars were of utmost importance. Content and substance was king. Promotion? Marketing? Advertising? Gimmicks? Woh kya hai? Wasn’t that for soaps, colas and biscuits? RaajneetiNot any more, sweetheart! Today promotion and marketing are critical components to the success of any film; key factors that can spell the difference between success and failure, boom or bust. Quality per se doesn’t seem to carry much weight as clearly demonstrated by the sad showing of films like Firaaq, Parzania, Mirch, The Japanese Wife, even Turning 30. No One Killed Jessica could be seen and used as a brilliant contemporary case-study, a super example of how focused, strategic, intelligently-crafted promotion can add solid, marketability to a small-budget product. For weeks before the film’s release its stars Rani Mukherjee and Vidya Balan were zipping around all the mandatory, must-do spots that define today’s promotion — malls, radio/ TV studios, newspaper offices, reality shows, fashion shows, school/colleges, place of orship — with maha enthusiasm, drama and fun, all of which provided a huge lift to Raj Kumar Gupta’s wonderful and engaging film. Little wonder that Jessica ($2 million project) has been declared this year’s first legit hit. The Baap of this game, however, remains Aamir Khan. During Ghajini, tonsured head, he went around the country providing Ghajini haircuts to all who stormed his meets. During Taare Zameen Par, he took on the academic and student community. For 3 Idiots he went one step ahead — he disappeared for long lengths of time only to re-surface with weavers in Madhya Pradesh, mom’s house in Benaras and kids at college campuses. Peepli Live too gained hugely from his heavy-duty promotion (4 continents in 16 days) and although it didn’t make it to the Oscars, it garnered great audience-connect and return on investment, despite being a startlingly non-mainstream small-budget product. The fact that it was also a brilliantly original and engaging satire made life easier for Khan. Even the “I don’t give a damn about PR” Salman Khan, seems to have read the writing on the wall, recognizing and tuning in to this game. He set aside quality time for promotional activities for both Wanted and Dabangg — and boy, did they rock! Most stars, however, (secretly) hate this “insane activity,” but can’t do anything about it because it comes with the territory and is of immense significance to the publicity of the film. Declares Rohan Sippy, an informed and evolved new-age producer: “Beyond stars, scripts and directors, marketing and promotion today are the real drivers that define boom or doom for a movie. It’s a fiercely competitive scene with diverse themes representing massive choices to an audience-base-forever hung-up on novelty, freshness and excitement in any which form and has zero respect, interest or time for loyalty or history. The real challenge is to get these guys to the theater through new inventive and innovative promos that are designed to ‘surprise and delight,’ leading to ticket-sales as also create a buzz that is infectious.” Peepli LiveToday even reticent and reluctant stars like Katrina Kaif and Akshay Kumar have got into the act. Kat’s crazy promo tours for Raajneeti and Tees Maar Khan and Akshay’s pan-India trips for Action Replay and Tees Maar Khan are interesting examples. Even the Big B, post-Mohabbatein has been agreeable to bogey along and continues do interviews across TV, radio and press. However, many of the new-gen are cool with it and totally agree that promos are critical in the selling of their movies. Chocolate Boy Imran Khan cheerfully zoomed across cities, at home and abroad, promoting I Hate Luv Storys, convinced that this exercise provides a brilliant on-the-ground, real connect with the audiences, vital for any star who cares for reality-checks.New-age, promo whiz-kids too speak confidently of challenges that this new discipline demands. As one of them observes: “It is often more challenging and tough than even shooting a film because the demands are not conventional. There is a science to it in terms of research, psychographics and demographics of the target audience, the right pitch — in terms of tone-of-voice — and visuals — all in tandem with the viewers’ curiosity and excitement connect. Also star-presence at the right time and place across cities are critical … and today, beyond the Metros, even some smaller centers must be patronized because of their box-office and revenue-generating potential. It’s complex!” No One Killed JessicaHowever, despite the quantum leaps that promos and marketing have taken as center-stage players in the selling of a film and the mega-budgets allocated to some big block-buster projects (such as nearly $4 million each for last year’s dud Blue and this year for Shah Rukh Khan’s Ra. One), along with specialized professionals who know this niche job well, even the most brilliantly publicized, packaged and promoted film can bomb, big time, if it lacks substance. Look toward Kites, Raavan, Blue, Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey, Dil Bole Hadippa!, Guzaarish and you get a clear and disturbing picture of how promotion is God can become a deadly joke. The conclusion must come from a sharp, perceptive film analyst, Siabal Chatterjee, who minces no words in offering his informed take: “Aamir Khan provides a fascinating study — in this area — relating to contrarian moves. He refuses to patronize award functions at home, but has no problem freaking out where the Oscars or other international film fests are concerned. When he is not involved in a movie, he is off the media radar but the moment he is ‘on’ — whether its haircuts, disguises, even publicly airing his private life, hitherto never ever discussed (when and where he first met Kiran; what attracted each to the other; how it is impossible not to fall in love with him; best and most annoying traits in each other, etc, etc, etc) – promotion ke liye kuch bhi karega! How do all this connect with Dhobi Ghat? Ask Mr. Perfectionist!” Related Items

The ruling Congress on Wednesday won eight seats in the by-elections to 17 wards of 15 urban local bodies held in a total of 11 districts of Rajasthan on June 10. While independent candidates supported by the Congress won two seats, the BJP registered victory in five wards.By-elections were held to fill the vacant positions in certain wards of municipalities and municipal councils in Jaipur, Alwar, Bhilwara, Sri Ganganagar, Bharatpur, Churu, Karauli, Hanumangarh, Bundi, Dholpur and Sirohi districts. A total of 14 municipality and three municipal council wards were contested in these districts. The Congress candidates won in Behror, Khairthal, Jahazpur, Indragarh, Sujangarh, Nohar, Shahpura and Hindon local bodies, while candidates supported by the party won at Gajsinghpur and Rawatsar.Rajasthan Congress president and Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot said the bypoll results were an indication of people’s faith in the State government’s welfare policies launched after the December 2018 Assembly elections. However, the Congress lost all the 25 seats in the State to the BJP in the recent Lok Sabha election. We won more seats: BJPBJP spokesperson Satish Punia said the number of seats won by the party had increased as the BJP earlier held only three of the 17 wards where by-elections were held. He alleged that the Congress government had “misused the resources” to win the bypolls after its failure on the law and order, agricultural loan waiver and water and power supply fronts.

As heavy rains lashed Punjab during the past three days, leaving its rivers Sutlej, Ravi and Beas in spate, a flood-like situation was witnessed in many parts of the State on Monday. Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Monday announced ₹100 crore for emergency relief and rehabilitation measures in the flood-hit regions of the State and said a special ‘Girdawari’ will be conducted as soon as the water level recedes to ensure adequate compensation for the affected farmers. The Chief Minister made these announcements during a tour of the flood-affected areas of Rupnagar district. Capt. Amarinder also expressed grief over the death of three persons due to roof collapse in Ludhiana district on Sunday.Rupnagar Deputy Commissioner Sumeet Jarangal informed the Chief Minister that due to heavy downpour in Rupnagar district the total release at Ropar headworks was 2,50,000 cusecs, in addition to unprecedented increase in flow in many rivulets like Swan Nadi (90,000 cusecs), Sirsa Nadi (60,000 cusecs), and Budhki Nadi (20,000 cusecs). “The district administration rescued more than 600 families from 45 villages. While there had been no reports of loss of human life there was significant loss of crops and cattle which was being assessed,” he said.Later, the Chief Minister held a meeting to review the flood situation in the State with senior officials. During the meeting it was revealed that the overall situation in the rivers Beas and Ravi was under control though danger continued to lurk in areas adjacent to the Sutlej river and further downstream, at Harike headworks in Ferozepur. The flood releases from the Bakhra dam was above its maintainable level, flowing currently at 1681.23 feet, an official statement said. Meanwhile, the National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force have been stationed at villages in Jalandhar. Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar Varinder Kumar Sharma said keeping in view the alarming situation due to release of 2,40,000 cusecs of water from Ropar headwork, companies of NDRF and SDRF have been stationed at vulnerable points in Shahkot, Nakodar and Phillaur. Also, Army authorities have also been requested to station their companies at all these sub-divisions so that they could help the administration in case of any need, he added. Flood relief teams of the Army under the Western Command are actively carrying out rescue operations in various areas of Punjab and Haryana. Teams of strengths of 60-70 persons each with requisite equipment and resources have been deployed at Mirthal in Pathankot district, Dinanagar in Gurdaspur district, Phillaur, Nakodar, and Shahkot in Jalandhar district and near Karnal in Haryana.A total of 15 persons have been rescued so far from various areas, said an official statement. In neighbouring Haryana, a flood-like situation was seen in many parts. The Indian Air Force rescuing nine persons stuck in Karnal district owing to the rise of water in the Yamuna river.
The Goa government has set up a three-member committee to review the findings of high-level panels formed earlier to identify private forest lands in the coastal state. The move comes after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on August 8 imposed a fine of ₹10,000 per day from July 2019 on the State government, till it submits the report on private forest land. The Government, in a notification issued on August 24, said a three-member panel will have to review the findings of the Karapurkar and Sawant committees (set up earlier) and submit its report within three months on the exact quantum of private forest land existing in Goa. This is the second review committee formed by the State government. In April last year, the Government constituted a similar committee which reviewed reports of the Karapurkar and Sawant committees, identifying 42.12 sqkm of land in Goa as private forest. However, the BJP-led State government last month rejected that review panel’s report, claiming the “aggrieved people were not heard by the review committee“.In the notification issued last week, State undersecretary (Forest) Shaila Bhosle said, “The committee has been constituted to finalise the report on private forests submitted by the review committee, after considering the objections of the affected parties whose properties are going to be identified as private forests.” The committee should consider the objections of the affected parties and submit a report before the time limit prescribed by the NGT, she said. The NGT allowed a final extension of three months for submission of the report, subject to deposit of a performance guarantee of ₹1 crore to the satisfaction of the Central Pollution Control Board. Last month, the then state Forest Minister Vijai Sardesai said it was incorrect to be assumptive about demarcation of land as forest, and people should be consulted before finalising the report. He said many a times, a land owner is not even consulted or informed before his assets get marked as a private forest, depending on a survey. He said that the stratified random sampling method adopted for the survey was not acceptable as the actual position should be known before marking the forest.
The BJP on Saturday appointed Lok Sabha MP Sanjay Jaiswal as its Bihar unit president and Amber MLA Satish Poonia as the chief of the Rajasthan unit.In a statement issued in New Delhi, the party said its president Amit Shah had approved the appointments and also that of Ajay Kumar as the general secretary (organisation) for Uttarakhand.Dr .Jaiswal, 53, is a three-time party MP from the West Champaran Lok Sabha constituency. A doctor by profession, he replaced Nityanand Rai who, earlier, was appointed as Minister of State for Home Affairs in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s the Cabinet.Dr. Jaiswal is also the chief whip of the party in the Lok Sabha. He had first won the Lok Sabha seat in 2009 and then in 2014. He defeated Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (RLSP) candidate Brijesh Kumar Kushwaha by 2.93 lakh votes in the 2019 poll.Dr. Jaiswal’s father Dr Madan Prasad Jaiswal had also been a three-time party MP from the constituency which, earlier, was known as Bettiah LS seat, in 1996, 1998 and 1999.Dr. Jaiswal had done his MBBS from the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) while MD (general medicine) from the Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH). He expressed his thanks to Mr. Shah for reposing faith in him.“This is an election year and party has entrusted great trust and faith in me…I’ll try my best to come up to the expectations of the top leadership,” he told the media in West Champaran. The appointment of Mr. Poonia, MLA from Jaipur district’s Amber constituency, came two-and-a-half months after the death of State chief Madan Lal Saini on June 24. Hailing from Churu’s Rajgarh town, Mr. Poonia, 55, is considered close to the RSS.An influential Jat leader, Mr. Poonia is known for his organisational skills and served as the State general secretary four times between 2004 and 2014. His appointment was made at a crucial time — just before the local body elections.Mr. Poonia was at present the party State spokesperson and was also looking after its membership drive. The strategy to appoint the Jat leader threw a major challenge before the ruling Congress ahead of the municipal polls, as the latter is under pressure to give a senior position in the party structure to the community.Mr. Poonia told reporters at the party headquarters in Jaipur that his working style would remain the same in his new capacity and the party workers were happy on the selection of a person “from among themselves”. “We will work for progress of all sections of society and strengthen the BJP at the booth level.”He alleged that the Congress had betrayed the farmers and the youth and neglected the law and order, which had led to a sharp increase in crimes. He said the BJP, while playing an effective role as the Opposition, would give a tough fight to the Congress in the local body polls and by-elections in two Assembly seats this year.

Yeddyurappa-led BJP government in a crisis. The first signs of dissidence cropped up last week when Yeddyurappa brought in his lieutenants in a September 22 Cabinet reshuffle at the cost of some independent MLAs whose support helped prop up the first-ever BJP government south of the Vindhyas in May 2008. One of them, Sports Minister Goolihatti Shekhar, had even threatened to kill himself if he was removed. Bellary mining baron and Tourism Minister G. Janardhana Reddy, whose brother Revenue Minister G. Karunakara Reddy was instrumental in mobilising the independents to smell a new future in the saffron party, had also wanted Shekhar to stay. Yeddyurappa, claiming the party high command and the RSS leadership had given him a carte blanche, threw caution to the winds and decided for himself.Kumaraswamy has taken on Chief Minister Yeddyurappa.Shekhar, like many others who felt wronged by the chief minister, cried foul. He and 18 other slighted MLAs wrote to Governor Hans Raj Bhardwaj, withdrawing their support to the Yeddyurappa government. The list comprised 14 BJP MLAs and five independents including seven ministers. Bhardwaj played by the book and asked Yeddyurappa to prove his majority on or before October 12 by 5 p.m. Kumaraswamy, meanwhile, had already built his bridges with the Congress high command, having met Sonia Gandhi some months ago. That he had been trooping in and out of the Raj Bhavan this week only added to his key role in the drama. With the state Congress in a comatose since 2006, the high command had no choice but to go with a Congress-JD(S) combo to take on the BJP. Sonia even roped in former JD(S) man and ex-deputy chief minister Siddaramaiah into the Congress in July 2006 and made him head of the Congress Legislature Party and Opposition leader in June 2009. Even as Yeddyurappa deputed Janardhana, who had nearly pulled down the government in October 2009, to placate more than a dozen rebel MLAs holed up in a Chennai hotel on October 6, Siddaramaiah and Kumaraswamy’s secret rendezvous threw enough hints of serious trouble for Yeddyurappa. The 224-member Assembly comprises 117 BJP MLAs, 73 and 28 from the Congress and the JD(S) respectively, and six independents. Yeddyurappa, hoping the Reddys will do the trick for him, desperately needs the rebels to “come back home” to clock the magic number of 113. The rebels have spurned his olive branch to have some senior colleagues resign to accommodate five or six of them now and six more in six months. The fact that Kumaraswamy’s key man Zameer Ahmed, a Bangalore JD(S) MLA who owns a fleet of buses, was liasioning with the rebel MLAs in Chennai is not good news for the BJP.advertisementDissident BJP MLAs address the media outside Raj Bhavan. The Reddys are under pressure from the BJP high command to bail out Yeddyurappa while the Congress-JD(S) alliance wants the government to fall on its own before exploiting it. Karunakara symbolically stood behind Yeddyurappa at the October 6 Cabinet meeting in the Vidhana Soudha while their close aide and Health Minister B. Sriramulu even offered to resign if it helped the beleagured Yeddyurappa. State Congress Working President D.K. Shivakumar, working closely with Siddaramaiah, says his party “will play its cards close to its chest”. JD(S) leader M.C. Nanaiah had also touched base with a key Congress leader in Bangalore. If the Congress-JD(S) combo manages to lure the rebels, Kumaraswamy will play kingmaker: Siddaramaiah can realise his dream of becoming chief minister and Kumaraswamy’s brother H.D. Revanna, his deputy. Time is running out and the heat is on Yeddyurappa to survive this ordeal. Or just get ready to hang up his boots in a few days.
