Yeddyurappa-led BJP government in a crisis. The first signs of dissidence cropped up last week when Yeddyurappa brought in his lieutenants in a September 22 Cabinet reshuffle at the cost of some independent MLAs whose support helped prop up the first-ever BJP government south of the Vindhyas in May 2008. One of them, Sports Minister Goolihatti Shekhar, had even threatened to kill himself if he was removed. Bellary mining baron and Tourism Minister G. Janardhana Reddy, whose brother Revenue Minister G. Karunakara Reddy was instrumental in mobilising the independents to smell a new future in the saffron party, had also wanted Shekhar to stay. Yeddyurappa, claiming the party high command and the RSS leadership had given him a carte blanche, threw caution to the winds and decided for himself.Kumaraswamy has taken on Chief Minister Yeddyurappa.Shekhar, like many others who felt wronged by the chief minister, cried foul. He and 18 other slighted MLAs wrote to Governor Hans Raj Bhardwaj, withdrawing their support to the Yeddyurappa government. The list comprised 14 BJP MLAs and five independents including seven ministers. Bhardwaj played by the book and asked Yeddyurappa to prove his majority on or before October 12 by 5 p.m. Kumaraswamy, meanwhile, had already built his bridges with the Congress high command, having met Sonia Gandhi some months ago. That he had been trooping in and out of the Raj Bhavan this week only added to his key role in the drama. With the state Congress in a comatose since 2006, the high command had no choice but to go with a Congress-JD(S) combo to take on the BJP. Sonia even roped in former JD(S) man and ex-deputy chief minister Siddaramaiah into the Congress in July 2006 and made him head of the Congress Legislature Party and Opposition leader in June 2009. Even as Yeddyurappa deputed Janardhana, who had nearly pulled down the government in October 2009, to placate more than a dozen rebel MLAs holed up in a Chennai hotel on October 6, Siddaramaiah and Kumaraswamy’s secret rendezvous threw enough hints of serious trouble for Yeddyurappa. The 224-member Assembly comprises 117 BJP MLAs, 73 and 28 from the Congress and the JD(S) respectively, and six independents. Yeddyurappa, hoping the Reddys will do the trick for him, desperately needs the rebels to “come back home” to clock the magic number of 113. The rebels have spurned his olive branch to have some senior colleagues resign to accommodate five or six of them now and six more in six months. The fact that Kumaraswamy’s key man Zameer Ahmed, a Bangalore JD(S) MLA who owns a fleet of buses, was liasioning with the rebel MLAs in Chennai is not good news for the BJP.advertisementDissident BJP MLAs address the media outside Raj Bhavan. The Reddys are under pressure from the BJP high command to bail out Yeddyurappa while the Congress-JD(S) alliance wants the government to fall on its own before exploiting it. Karunakara symbolically stood behind Yeddyurappa at the October 6 Cabinet meeting in the Vidhana Soudha while their close aide and Health Minister B. Sriramulu even offered to resign if it helped the beleagured Yeddyurappa. State Congress Working President D.K. Shivakumar, working closely with Siddaramaiah, says his party “will play its cards close to its chest”. JD(S) leader M.C. Nanaiah had also touched base with a key Congress leader in Bangalore. If the Congress-JD(S) combo manages to lure the rebels, Kumaraswamy will play kingmaker: Siddaramaiah can realise his dream of becoming chief minister and Kumaraswamy’s brother H.D. Revanna, his deputy. Time is running out and the heat is on Yeddyurappa to survive this ordeal. Or just get ready to hang up his boots in a few days.
(left to right) Dhoni, R Ashwin and Suresh Raina.Former Australian test cricketer, Tom Moody, currently coaching Sri Lanka for the World Cup, is not impressed with the way the Men in Blue have performed in the tournament. There have been times when Indians have been extremely lucky. “M S Dhoni must realise that luck alone will not help his side win the Cup,” he warned ESPN Star Sports commentator Alan Wilkins on the sidelines of a match at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Excerpts. Q. So Team India’s weakest link is bowling?A. India’s bowling has let them down very badly and they have to work out a formula and stick to it. It has not happened so far in the tournament. Each bowler has to know his role. Once each bowler knows his full responsibility and when he is going to bowl, he will get the best out of the overs allotted. It needs to happen fast.Q. Indians have got great starts while batting but don’t seem to be able to follow up. Why?A. It’s strange. India have been in such dominant positions but they folded dramatically, especially against England, when they should have scored another 30 runs at least. They faltered against South Africa too, when they should have had another 50 runs on the board. They have to value each run scored. Indians threw away priceless runs in crucial matches, especially when they had the opposition bowlers at their mercy.Q. How would you bowl the death over?advertisementA. Dhoni, not me, has to think about his “death bowlers.” Did Ashish Nehra, for instance, know that he was going to be called upon to bowl the final over against South Africa? The Indian skipper has to have a mental checklist of the death bowlers who will do the job for him. And no one should regret that decision.Q. What about India’s poor fielding and lack of fitness?A. It is too late for India to improve their individual athleticism and skills through conditioning, but they have liabilities in the field which are costing runs. It is critical, therefore, for Dhoni to have fielders in positions where they can do the best job. Doing skill exercises in the middle of the tournament won’t help India’s fielders. Knowing what each player is capable of in the field is crucial.Q. So what is the Indian team’s primary strength?A. India’s top order batting is as good as any top order in the World Cup and all the batsmen are in form-Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kholi and Yuvraj Singh. They are the apparatus through which India can impose their superiority in this tournament. India’s top order has to continue to get big scores because India’s bowling is their weakness, and their fielding is also likely to cost too many runs. So the responsibility is on India’s batsmen to bat India into match-winning totals. The collapse against South Africa was inexcusable.Q. So will Dhoni have to do things differently?A. Yes, in a way he has to work out strategies in bowling and fielding that will complement India’s batting. He has to make it clear to every member of the team what his job responsibility is in the side. India’s approach to matches from here on has to be more formulaic. It must not be left to chance.
After registering a comprehensive victory over Kochi Tuskers Kerala to bring their Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign back on track, a confident Rajasthan Royals team will be eyeing an upset when they take on leaders Mumbai Indians in Jaipur on Friday. The Sawai Man Singh Stadium will witness the first clash this season between two ageless legends of cricket and whether the Shane Warne-led Rajasthan Royals can the Sachin Tendulkar-led Mumbai Indians remains to be seen. Mumbai, hot favourites this year, have been able to live up to their reputation by winning all but one of their six matches in the tournament.Rajasthan, on the other hand, have had a roller-coaster ride so far. Out of seven matches, they have won and lost three each with one match having been abandoned due to rain. They currently have seven points from seven matches, while Mumbai have earned 10 from six. After receiving two successive thrashings, Rajasthan managed to notch up a fine victory against the in-form Kochi Tuskers Kerala in their previous match, with Warne leading from the front with a three-wicket haul on home turf.On Thursday too, they will be relying on their captain-cum-coach to do the trick for them and expect Johan Botha, Siddharth Trivedi and Shane Watson to assist Warne with the ball.So far, the Royals’ strategy has been to restrict their opponents and chase down modest targets. It is high time their batting lineup that boasts of Watson, Rahul Dravid, Ross Taylor, Botha and rising star Ashok Menaria fires together and makes an impact.advertisementThe batsmen have shown occasional glimpses of their ability but are yet to win a match on their own, and they will need to be at their best to tackle a bowling lineup featuring the leading wickettaker, Lasith Malinga, Harbhajan Singh and Munaf Patel.Mumbai’s batsmen, meanwhile, led by batting maestro Tendulkar, have clicked extremely well in this competition. With the likes of Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu, Andrew Symonds and Kieron Pollard doing their job to perfection, Mumbai should be hoping for a cake-walk.Their fielding, no doubt inspired by their fielding coach and South African legend Jonty Rhodes, has been fabulous. “We have Jonty as the fielding coach and the boys have responded well. In the previous match it was the fielding rather my five- wicket haul that won the match for us,” said Harbhajan on the eve of the match.Bhajji available for WIHarbhajan also said he would be available for the Indian team’s forthcoming tour of the West Indies but was not aware of the plans of other senior players.”I have no idea from where the news (of senior players opting out of West Indies tour) has poured in. I am available for the tour. As far others are concerned, neither have I talked to anybody and nor has anybody has talked to me. We will be playing three Tests there and I don’t want to miss any of those,” he said.Harbhajan praised teammate Ambati Rayudu, saying he was a special talent.”It would be a challenge for youngsters like Rayudu to face a great spinner (like Warne). He is a special talent and we always knew that. He was unfortunately lost in between but lately he has been performing well. He is capable of filling in the big shoes of great Indian batsmen like VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid,” the off- spinner said.- With PTI inputs
“Suresh Kalmadi’s conduct has tarnished the image of the country,” was how CBI described him while opposing the bail plea of the former CWG Organising Committee chief arrested on charges of cheating, conspiracy and corruption in the award of games related contracts. “We are opposing the bail plea (of Kalmadi) as other co-accused in this case had already been denied bail by this court. Investigation is going on. Kalmadi’s conduct has tarnished the image of the country,” CBI prosecutor told Special CBI Judge Talwant Singh. Kalmadi was arrested along with OC Joint Director General (Sport) A.S.V. Prasad and OC Deputy Director General (Procurement) Surjit Lal on April 25 for allegedly awarding an illegal contract to a Swiss firm for Timing-Scoring-Result (TSR) system for the mega sporting event last year causing a loss of over Rs 90 crore to the exchequer. CBI submitted Kalmadi constituted a committee of “handpicked persons” to push for a selected brand. – With inputs from PTI
Former sports minister Mani Shankar Aiyar wasn’t the only one to raise an alarm about Suresh Kalmadi. New revelations are bound to further embarrass the Prime Minister’s Office. Former sports ministers M.S. Gill and the late Sunil Dutt had also red flagged the former Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chief and his methods. In a letter dated September 26, 2007, Gill had pointed out the astonishing jump in costs for holding the Games and hinted at gross mismanagement. Gill had written, “At the time of the agreement, they were to be about Rs 200 crore. It is now something less than Rs 800 crore and we are coming to the Cabinet soon for something above Rs 1600 crore. In the past, the (Organising) Committee rarely met and generally endorsed post-facto decisions, taken in a highly centralised system.” As far back as 2004, late Sports Minister Sunil Dutt had lodged a strong protest against the appointment of Suresh Kalmadi, now sacked and languishing in jail. Dutt had written: “I was surprised to see newspaper reports about a resolution passed by Indian Olympic Association (lOA) regarding appointment of President, lOA as Chairman of the Organising Committee, which is at variance with the decisions taken in the GOM meeting.” Headlines Today had broadcast letters written by Aiyar, warning the PM of financial bungling by the Kalmadi-led OC. In the letter written on October 25, 2007 Aiyar had written: “I grow increasingly alarmed at the profligacy of CWG OC Chairman. Present projections of CWG expenditure have topped Rs 20,000 crore!” Aiyar had even contested the PM’s claim that his objections were merely ideological. “Hope this refreshes his memory,” Aiyar said. Caught in a bind, the then MoS in the PMO, tried to clear the air in vain. Prithivraj Chavan says, “I am not aware what Mani Shankar Aiyer has said. There are many things which are said. I would have to see what he had said. It was a courtesy meet. There were certain pending issues.” BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said despite the letters, “the loot was on”. advertisement
Police said Sean Hoare, the whistleblower reporter who alleged widespread hacking at the News of the World, has been found dead. The phone-hacking controversy took a new turn on Monday with the death of a former News of the World journalist, Sean Hoare, who first alleged that illegal practices were being adopted at the tabloid under the editorship of Andy Coulson.Coulson, who was arrested two weeks ago, resigned as editor of the tabloid due to the phone-hacking allegations, but was later hired by David Cameron as his communications director as leader of the opposition and also later as Prime Minister.Hoare was found dead on Tuesday at his home in Watford, but his death was not being considered as suspicious. The issue continued to rock the corridors of power as two top police officers of the Scotland Yard – Sir Paul Stevenson and John Yats – resigned, even as anticipation built up about on Tuesday hearing before MPs of Rupert and James Murdoch, and Rebekah Brooks. The Culture, Media and Sport Committee of the House of Commons is scheduled to examine the three leading lights of the controversy while Sir Paul Stevenson, former police commissioner, will appear before the Home Affairs Select Committee. The hearings will be telecast live, and are expected to register a wide audience due to the phone-hacking controversy that has hit Murdoch’s media empire in the UK hard.Hoare first levelled allegations about phone-hacking at the now defunct tabloid in a New York Times investigation into the phone-hacking issue.advertisementHe told the newspaper that not only did Coulson know of the phone hacking, but that he actively encouraged his staff to intercept the phone calls of celebrities in the pursuit of exclusives. In a subsequent interview with the BBC he alleged that he was personally asked by his then-editor, Coulson, to tap into phones.- With PTI inputs
Indian recurve women’s team of Laishram Bombayla Devi, Deepika Kumari and Chekrovolu Swuro on Wednesday earned three Olympic quota places by beating France 216-213 in the first round of the team event of the World Archery Championship at Turin, Italy. Unfortunately, Indian men’s team comprising of Rahul Banerjee, Tarundeep Rai and Jayanta Talukdar lost by just a point, 215-216 against the Chinese team. In normal course, Indian men would have been out of contention for Olympic berths but as luck would have it, Olympic Games’ host Great Britain also qualified defeating Chinese Taipei. Since Great Britain has already been assured of three quota places as the host, India is in the play-off for the three berths, the results of which will be known later. Meanwhile, world champion Korea, China and Ukraine assured themselves of six quota places (men three and women three). Italy, France, USA and Mexico made it to London Olympics from men’s section. Georgia, India, Denmark, Chinese Taipei and Russia qualified in women’s category.- With PTI inputs
Vijender Kumar Beniwal has time and again talked of wanting to improve on his Beijing Olympics bronze medal. On Friday night, egged on by a decent crowd, the Indian hero registered a comprehensive 14:10 win against Kazakhstan’s Danabek Sukhanov to enter the 75kg category pre-quarter finals. The name of the boxing arena in London is called ‘Excel.’ If Vijender wanted to gain inspiration from it, he did so as he won his bout with a good mixture of measured tactics and sound technique. In the first round, Vijender sized up his opponent well and the hard right-hander in the final seconds helped him take a 5:4 lead.In the second round, the Indian role model and the Kazakh pugilist stayed in the centre of the ring. Again, towards the closing stages of the round, Vijender had a left upper cut to gain the lead.Once into the decider, Vijender did look a bit tired. But having garnered so much experience in these four years post Beijing, he did nothing in a rush of blood and won his bout comfortably.National coach GS Sandhu said: “It was a tough opening bout and Vijender boxed cautiously. In the first round, he led by a point and repeated the same in the second round.””Yes, Vijender’s experience is very useful but let us not forget these are the Olympics and the world’s best are competing,” added Sandhu.Later, Vijender said: “I am happy to win the first round and have given the team a good start. It’s now on to the next challenge,” said the 26-year-old.Vijender will now take on Terrell Gausha of USA in the pre-quarters on August 2.Gausha got the better of Andranik Hukobyan of Armenia in the opening round with referee stopping contest. The story of Gausha is a fascinating one. As one who made it to the American team at the last minute, he is respected by his federation.”I think Gausha is a very talented boxer with great skill and a technical mindset,” Anthony Bartkowski, the executive director of USA Boxing has said.”So there’s very little we needed to do with him in that regard. Now it’s just harnessing all that energy,” added Bartowski. At age 20, Gausha had chucked boxing and got married and had a kid. But the way he has bounced back after four years has been incredible. This time around, USA Boxing decided that they were not going to pick boxers for the Olympics on automatic qualification and have trials. And that’s how Gausha, who stands at five feet and 10 inches made the grade.advertisementJai Bhagwan storms into pre-quartersCommonwealth Games bronze medallist Jai Bhagwan (60kg) moved into the pre-quarterfinals as he got past Allisop Andrique of Seychelles on Sunday afternoon.Jai Bhagwan used his height and reach and was not bothered by the big occasion. Competing in the Olympics for the first time, the 26-year-old Indian showed court craft and technical superiority. In the first game, he opened up a quick 7:3 lead and in the second he registered a same score with smart punches.Once into the last round, Bhagwan still looked energetic as he used offence and defence for an 18:8 win.Bhagwan knows his next round opponent as well when he faces Gani Zhailauov from Kazakhstan. Coach Sandhu said Bhagwan had lost to the same boxer in the AIBA world championship quarter-finals.
The Indian male boxers have left fans high and dry, unable to win a single medal at the London Olympics, but federation secretary Brig P K Muralidharan Raja is not going to press the panic button. In an exclusive chat with Mail Today on Thursday, Raja’s lament was the poor quality of work done by the referees.”I think we were distinctly unlucky not to have won a medal in men’s boxing, but there are no excuses. We had our chances and the depth was there for all to see. Had these same bouts taken place in some other country and not Britain, the results may have been different,” thundered Raja.In his view, even Devendro Singh’s last bout, which ended in agony, was a sad one to lose. “I am sure, because of the opponent being from Ireland, we were at the receiving end,” added Raja.Till now, there was a huge debate how the Indian boxers had lost some close bouts in London but Raja’s words make it clear that there are dubious verdicts even today in amateur boxing.”I am an international referee and am convinced the Indian boxers have been unlucky,” said Raja.Looking ahead, Raja said there is no need to panic about the future of Indian boxing. “It’s very creditable that seven male boxers qualified this time and there is huge depth. We need to keep working hard on their training programme,” said Raja. But there could be a brief lull in India’s future boxing preparations after this as elections are due to take place next month.advertisementAs per the government guidelines, Abhay Chautala, president of the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation, has served two terms and will have to move out.”I have served two terms as secretary and can now become the president of the federation. We have our plans in place though at this point of time my talking about it may be premature,” said Raja.It is well known that Raja has played a huge role in making the federation plans all these years and deciding on the exposure-cum-training schedules. There is a clause in the government guidelines which says a government servant cannot serve more than one term as a sports federation official. However, Raja is hoping this will be waived off as he has permission from his department and the Indian Army to continue as an office bearer.”I am in any case retiring next November from the Army and am ready to be the president,” said Raja. The problem with sports federation elections is that the returning officer goes strictly by the rule book. However, if the sports ministry can make an exception, Raja can continue. In Raja’s view, the growth of Indian boxing has been a well planned one. At a time when more than technique of the boxers, scoring punches for the computers to register points has become important, Raja says it has been a coordinated effort.”We leave the coaching to the coaches but our technical experts do tell them what way the boxers need to be groomed. It is as a combined result of this our boxers have done well, though the disappointment of not winnng a medal is there,” said Raja. But the biggest statement from Raja came when he said the Indian boxing federation needed a total revamp. “I have always said that sports federations should be run like a corporate body. If I am to run this federation, I will ensure there is a total revamp and that will benefit the sport. We have got excellent support from the government and there is so much talent waiting to be tapped. If you got to the north east, there are so many women boxers who want to emulate Mary Kom,” said Raja.As regards the exit of national coach GS Sandhu, as he had said this would be his last international assignment, Raja said there was nothing to worry.”I think it’s only after the elections we can talk about all this. Let us celebrate Mary Kom’s medal for the time being,” he added.
