Arsenal beat Chelsea 6-5 on penalties in International Champions Cup
Arsenal beat Chelsea 6-5 on penalties after Alexandre Lacazette canceled Antonio Rudiger’s early strike late into stoppage time in an entertaining International Champions Cup match at the Aviva Stadium.Antonio Rudiger broke the deadlock in the sixth minute when he headed in from a Cesc Fabregas corner. Chelsea could have gone 2-0 ahead but Petr Cech saved a Alvaro Morata penalty before Lacazette diverted in Reiss Nelson’s cross from the right in the final seconds of injury time to take the game into penalties.Cech again showed his experience and saved Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s badly taken spot-kick to give Arsenal a deserving victory. This was Maurizio Sarri’s first defeat as Chelsea manager.Thank you for an awesome welcome, DublinRespect to all our Irish Gooners pic.twitter.com/hSQibuhTF7Arsenal FC (@Arsenal) August 2, 2018Sarri had made three changes to Chelsea’s starting XI from the Inter Milan match, that they won on penalties in Nice on Saturday. Unai Emery on the other hand, was forced to withdraw Aaron Ramsey from the starting XI just before the match started due to an injury he picked up during the warm-up. He was replaced by Emile Smith-Rowe.The match was a pretty star-studded affair as both the managers looked to give minutes to their stars before the Premier League commences on August 10. The only Chelsea academy product in the starting XI was Callum Hudson-Odoi and he did impress with his pace and creativity as the FA Cup winners played an entertaining first-half.Odoi made his mark in the game early, when he raced into the left flank, checked and found an unmarked Fabregas, whose shot was tipped over by Cech. From the resulting corner, Rudiger scored after a pin-point Fabregas curler found the German unmarked in the box and he gladly obliged with a goal.advertisementOdi continued his impressive run throughout the game as he tormented Hector Bellerin every time he ran at him and in the 14th minute, he god a penalty off him after the U-17 World Cup winner was brought down in the box. However, Morata failed to convert the penalty as Cech dived low to his right to keep the ball out.Morata’s finishing continued to haunt Chelsea as he wasted a few chances to give them the lead.Arsenal on the other hand, were looking fluid and in control despite going down early. Mesut Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan continued to find spaces through the middle and ran at the Chelsea defence in the absence of N’Golo Kante.Although they were attacking, Arsenal were not getting the goals. Cech’s sensational form had kept them in the game as Chelsea looked to go 2-0 up.Emery then brought on Alex Iwobi in the 65th minute, brining in some pace and some urgency. Iwobi made an immediate impact and forced a save from both Willy Caballero and his replacement Marcin Bulka.Lacazette was guilty of the worst miss of the match as he misjudged his angles after slipping the ball through Andreas Christensen’s legs but he later made up for it as he connected from a low Nelson cross to take the game to the penalties.Good work tonight, ladsHere’s @UnaiEmery_ welcoming the squad back to the dressing room #ICC2018 pic.twitter.com/88V38edGnGArsenal FC (@Arsenal) August 1, 2018All players barring Loftus-Cheek converted from the spot in the game.Chelsea will next face Manchester City in the Community Shield final at Wembley on Sunday while Arsenal play Lazio in their last pre-season fixture at the Friends Arena in Stockholm on August 4.
