Alabama has not hired former Maryland coach DJ Durkin, says Nick Saban
It’s unclear if Durkin’s position with Alabama is temporary, but coach Nick Saban issued a statement Friday saying he has not been hired.DJ Durkin is spending a few days with our staff in Tuscaloosa from a professional development standpoint,” Saban said. “He has not been hired in any capacity at (Alabama). He is simply observing our operation as many other coaches have done through the years.”Durkin was fired from Maryland in October after an investigation surrounding the circumstances of offensive lineman Jordan McNair’s death revealed a pattern of bullying and verbal abuse within the football program. Could DJ Durkin become a part of Alabama’s football program?The former Maryland coach has popped up in Tuscaloosa to help out with the Crimson Tide as a consultant before the team’s Playoff run, AL.com reported. Maryland first placed Durkin on administrative leave in August, right after an ESPN report alleged a “toxic culture” within the program. While an emergency board assembled to look into the accusations said it didn’t find a continual toxic culture, several concerning incidents, including McNair’s death, led the program to clean house.Durkin, who maintained he didn’t know anything of the abuse, was reinstated on Oct. 30, but was fired the next day amid backlash.No. 1 Alabama will take on No. 4 Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl for the first round of the College Football Playoff on Dec. 29.
