Press release: South Africa’s FDI profile positions the country as a highly attractive investment destination
The EY 2017 Attractiveness Programme Africa, measures the FDI attractiveness of 46 African markets and moreover indicates that South Africa experienced an increase of 6.9% in FDI flows to the market in 2016. (Image:EY 2017 Attractiveness Programme Africa)Johannesburg, Monday 22 May 2017 – The South African Nation Brand continues to be the largest recipient of FDI on the African continent, and is the largest source of intra-regional investment – this is in addition to having recently made a comeback in the top 25 most attractive global investment destinations. This is according to findings from the EY Attractiveness Programme Africa 2017, the AT Kearney Foreign Direct Investment Confidence Index, as well as the Brand South Africa’s Investor Perceptions Research.Brand South Africa’s General Manager for Research – Dr Petrus de Kock says the findings on South Africa’s FDI profile underlines the fact that global investors have confidence in the market, and see the country as an attractive investment destination. “Opportunities identified in these respective indices should be vigorously pursued through a collaborative approach between business and government in South Africa – especially after the credit ratings downgrade,” adds Dr de Kock..Major findings from these indices are that South Africa attracted 20.6% of all FDI projects on the African continent in 2016 with an increase of 6.9% on 2015; the country is the 6th largest source of FDI in the African economy; and the diversified economy, geographical location, infrastructure (hard and soft) and logistical capabilities – play a major role in attracting investment, trade and related global economic activity.“South Africa continues to attract the bulk of FDI projects destined for the continent with a share of 20.6%, Egypt at 11.7%, Morocco at 12%, Nigeria at 7.5%, and Kenya at 5.9%. Notable in this regard is that EY indicates investment flows favoured Africa’s more diversified markets. This means South Africa’s economic profile and diversification remains a key attractiveness feature. The EY 2017 Attractiveness Programme Africa further notes that even as its economy remains under pressure, South Africa retains its appeal as a launchpad for growth across the continent,” said Dr de Kock. The EY 2017 Attractiveness Programme Africa, measures the FDI attractiveness of 46 African markets and moreover indicates that South Africa experienced an increase of 6.9% in FDI flows to the market in 2016. The sectors that dominated include: Consumer Products and Retail – projects more than doubled from 19 in 2015 to 41 in 2016.The 2017 A.T. Kearney Foreign Direct Investment Confidence Index is characterised by a perception of safety in developed markets – Europe in particular. However, the 2017 Index marked the emergence of newcomers UAE, New Zealand, and South Africa – a clear sign of slight increase in investment intentions in emerging markets according to Dr de Kock.“According to the AT Kearney FDI Confidence Index, South Africa GDP growth is expected to reach 0.8% in 2017 and double to 1.6% in 2018, A.T. Kearney notes that with the country’s improvements in infrastructure and education, investors view South Africa as being poised to lead one of the world’s next major manufacturing hubs,” concluded Dr de Kock.Follow the conversation on #SANationBrand
Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest While we are interested in improving yield of Ohio crops, we also are reluctant to recommend practices that cost time and money and are not likely to be of assistance. From several on-farm trials conducted by OSU Extension professionals over the years, we see no value in applying sugar to our Ohio row crops. In a 2013 Crawford County trial with 3 pounds of sugar per acre to soybean, there was no yield difference from the check: http://agcrops.osu.edu/sites/agcrops/files/ofr_reports/Sugar-on-MRI-Soybeans.pdfIn two trials in Clark County in 2013:• Two sugar sources (sucrose and dextrose) at 4 pounds per acre produced no yield difference from the check• And for soybeans — sucrose at 4 pounds per acre — there was no yield difference from the check. For more see: http://agcrops.osu.edu/sites/agcrops/files/ofr_reports/Sugar-Applications-for-Corn-and-Soybean.pdfIn a 2014 soybean trial conducted at two locations in Clark Country and in Wood County, Table 1 shows no yield advantage for sugar applied to soybean.Table 1. His comment on trying foliar sugar applications, “other management strategies to improve soybean yield should take precedence over applying sugar.”We suggest focusing on the basics of crop production first. With funding from the Ohio Soybean Council, we’ve investigated yield limiting factors in Ohio soybean production. There are many factors that influence soybean yield (i.e., variety selection, planting date, soybean cyst nematode, weed control, etc); however, one factor that has really risen to the top is soil fertility. From over 550 soil samples collected throughout Ohio between 2013-2015, 35% were below the critical level for soil phosphorus (< 15 ppm Bray P1) and 21% were below the critical level for potassium.Additionally, we looked at soybean yield from these fields. On average, fields with low soil phosphorus yielded 7 bushels per acre less than fields with adequate soil phosphorus. Fields with low soil potassium yielded 4 bushels per acre less than fields with adequate soil potassium. Before considering untested or unproven inputs, consider inputs that are most likely to improve your bottom line.
Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting mike kirkwood While Hyper-V is included with the cost of Windows Server 2008 R2, centralized management features and dynamic migration will cost extra through Microsoft’s Virtual Machine Manager (VMM).Hyper-V is making significant progress as a product, but it also seems that it will take Microsoft a few years to evolved Hyper-V into a real contender in the market It may start getting traction for shops predominantly using Microsoft technology today and have deep relationships to the mothership. Last week, Microsoft announced a significant partnership and investment with HP that focuses on optimizing hardware and software solutions. Microsoft and HP are developing patterns where virtualization, SQL Sever, and Exchange server are deployed together and optimized in both hardware, software, and OS. This is a key competitive offering for enterprises.SummaryMicrosoft is a logical leader in this space and can’t be considered out of the race. The partnerships and investments in the channel will likely pay off. Hyper-V is growing features and has a distinct advantage in reaching customers through the natural relationships Microsoft has in the enterprise.Citrix XENServer is a real option and is competing on price and features. The product is backed by a leader in the desktop virtualization space, Citrix. Considering the array of features offered in the free product, it is definitely worth taking a close look at.For full featured end-to-end server virtualization, it is hard to beat VMware. VMware solutions have the features, performance and price. Whether your needs are on the low end or high end VMware is there. If you are on the high end, it won’t come cheap but VMware knows they still have a considerable lead in the market for features customers want. Considering the price to get started, it may be worth it to try each of them out with your team to see which fits best with your environment. What do you think, is free a good price for server virtualization?Photo credit: pfala Virtualization technology can improve the cost efficiency of the data center by running servers at higher utilization. Deploying virtual servers can yield a more energy efficient data center and reduce the total footprint of a computing environment.Although IT managers have started adopting virtualization for critical infrastructure, reports such as the poll conducted by Network Instruments in 2009 and reported on by Information World suggest that many IT managers could not confirm that they got the expected savings by virtualizing their environment. In that context, it is very nice to report that all of the key virtualization software vendors provide free or low-cost solutions that can be deployed and managed by IT teams. These solutions can be deployed in production environments so that teams can get started and determine for themselves if it is appropriate for their environment to host applications on virtual servers.VMwareVirtualization technology has evolved considerable over the past years. The market-leader, VMware has been adding features and improving the performance of their offerings, including addressing applications that use intensive I/O operations and offering robust management tools. The free ESXi version is a low-cost solution in the market that is useful for many scenarios. While ESXi does not include vCenter (formerly virtual center, centralized management tool for managing multiple VMware physical servers) or VMotion (dynamic migration) or clustering, in most cases these issues are easily addressed with proper planning. These features are clearly in the upgrade path for teams that need them.We interviewed Tom Moore, an IT leader who has managed virtual production environments working for a Global Fortune 100 company for over eight years. We asked him to characterize his teams use of the free VMware ESXi. His team considered this when his organization was faced with a budget crunch, he said it was a “no brainer” to switch from full ESX to ESXi instead of open source XEN that’s baked into various Linux distributions. “Also, for the minimal charge of couple hundred dollars you can add vCenter support to ESXi, which is cheap compared to the thousands of dollars per CPU to get the full VMware product now called vSphere,” he said.Moore continued, “As a standard approach, our company has switched to ESXi when high availability features like VMware clustering and VMotion are not required. Use of a load balancer in front of your VMware farm is sufficient in most cases. This was our approach at before VMware even had ESX and clustering built into the product.”Offering ESXi proves to be a good starting place for organizations looking for a solution that provides higher density and the team is ready to design the environment around the pieces the free offering doesn’t offer.Citrix XENServerCitrix XENServer states its path into the enterprise: Enterprise-class. Cloud-proven. Free. A quote from their website:“Citrix XenServer is the only enterprise-class, cloud-proven server virtualization platform that delivers the critical features of live migration and centralized multi-server management at no cost.”Citrix XENServer’s free solution supports clustering and dynamic migration. Adding more features into the free solution is a competitive edge that Citrix brings to managers considering XENSever in the data center. This alone might be a good reason to consider it for a high availability environment on a budget. One key area to consider is the XENServer management tools. These features are still evolving to meet the level of sophistication that VMware offers. For some, it might not be worth the trade-off. However, Citrix XENServer does provide a lot of features that are attractive in the free product. PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. – Fourteen people arrested while protesting a pipeline in northwestern British Columbia will have to wait about two months to learn if contempt charges against them will be pursued as a criminal or civil matter. The 14 were in court in Prince George Monday after being arrested Jan. 7 when heavily armed RCMP officers dismantled a blockade south of Houston, B.C.Justice Marguerite Church agreed with a request to put the matter over to April 15 to give more time to go over disclosure and allow the B.C. Criminal Justice Branch to consider how to proceed. Whether to move to the matter to Smithers, closer to where the defendants live, will also be considered at the April hearing.Arrests began after Coastal GasLink won an interim injunction prohibiting protesters from impeding pre-construction work on the $6.2-billion pipeline which would carry natural gas from northeastern B.C. to Kitimat. The gas would then be liquefied for shipment overseas as part of the recently approved $40-billion LNG Canada project.Meanwhile, those opposing a permanent injunction against any further blockades of the pipeline now have until Feb. 20 to make their case after the deadline was extended from Jan. 31.Coastal GasLink has been given until May 31 to file its response.
