4 injured in Portlandarea chemical release

(AP) — Fire officials in the Portland suburb of Milwaukie, Ore., say four people suffered minor injuries Wednesday when a chemical cloud was released from a manufacturing business.The release prompted the evacuation of Precision Castparts. Officials warned residents within a half-mile radius to stay inside Wednesday night.At 5 a.m. today, emergency officials declared the area clear and workers were returning to the plant.Two firefighters and two company employees suffered respiratory irritation. Clackamas Fire District 1 spokesman Steve McAdoo says they were taken to a hospital as a precaution.The Oregonian described the cloud as hydrochloric and nitric acid. McAdoo says a power failure affected the air scrubber that scrubs the fumes at the plant, so fumes built up and then escaped.
