More recently, Minister of Tourism Derek Hanekom acknowledged that Kirstenbosch is one of the country’s most important tourist attractions.“We are also very proud to announce that we exceeded 1-million visitors in one year for the first time in the garden’s history in 2014. This represented an increase of 27% on the previous year.”‘Garden tourists’With tourism the world’s fourth-largest industry and garden tourism a significant part of it, the awards were inaugurated in 2011. Garden tourism awards are presented annually to organisations and individuals who have distinguished themselves in the development and promotion of the garden experience as a tourism attraction.“It is estimated that there are 250-million ‘garden tourists’ worldwide and significantly more if garden festivals, events and garden shows were included,” said Dr Richard Benfield, chair of the International Garden Tourism Network. “These awards highlight the world’s most dynamic garden experiences and garden tourism’s limitless potential.”International Garden Tourism award winnersGarden of the Year: Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, South AfricaGarden Festival of the Year: Hokkaido Garden Show Daisetsu and Related Garden Movement of Hokkaido, JapanGarden Event of the Year: RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, United KingdomFlower Festival of the Year: Chiang Mai Flower Festival, ThailandFlower Event of the Year: Tapis de Fleur, Visit Brussels, BelgiumDestination of the Year: Victoria, British Columbia, CanadaNew Garden Experience of the Year – The Moselle Award: Dubai Miracle Garden, United Arab EmiratesMedia of the Year: GardenTours.com, The NetherlandsPerson of the Year: Paul Redman Executive Director, Longwood Gardens, USASAinfo reporterlast_img read more

Firefox Creates a Smarter Browser Bar

first_imgTop Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting A new add-on to Firefox combines resources location and category search to the toolbar while protecting your browsing activity.AwesomeBar HD is a spin-off from the Home Dash project designed by Mozilla developer Edward Lee to improve browsing and content discovery without the use of a toolbar. AwesomeBar is the opposite of Home Dash: instead of getting rid of the toolbar, it makes the address bar much more intuitive. The AwesomeBar makes searching from the toolbar more semantic by allowing the user to search the Web via categories. Search movies, sports or people through the most pertinent sites pertaining to the topic. Say you want to search maps. Hover your cursor over the maps tag in the tool bar and a pull-down menu with Google Maps, Bing Maps or MapQuest appears. The references tag will allow you to search Wikipedia, Answers.com or Dictionary.com and so forth.AwesomeBar taps into the specialized search offered by those sites and returns more granular results than if you were just trying a Google search from a generic toolbar. In terms of privacy, Firefox will not send input to a remote server. Here is the explanation in the introductory video:“Instead, when you browse to a previously visited page, Firefox will only look through its local history without any network activity. The results come back in an order that looks at both how frequently and how recently you’ve been to the pages in addition to some adaptive learning for a bit of awesome.”One problem that we noticed is that the address bar does not save the URL of the site you are on once you get there. Instead, there is a blank spot ready for the next query. For people who regularly copy and paste links from the address bar that becomes a problem. Lee is open to feedback and the tools are still in experimental mode. If you have suggestions, head on over to his page and let him know. If you want to see the code for the AwesomeBar, Lee has posted it on GitHub. Salesforce Finally Connects Heroku To Its Cloud

first_imgCloud Hosting for WordPress: Why Everyone is Mo… Serverless Backups: Viable Data Protection for … Salesforce finally connected the powerful Heroku cloud application platform to its own database layer on Tuesday with the release of the Heroku Connect tool. The move was promised last year when the company debuted its Salesforce1 mobile app, which was designed as a mobile one-stop shop for all of Salesforce’s various business application tools.Heroku and Force.com, the cloud computing platform as a service (PaaS) from Salesforce.com, represent two vastly different development systems based on completely different programming languages—but Salesforce now has a working bi-directional connection between them, in the form of the Heroku Connect Tool.Released only in beta form in 2013, Heroku Connect is now live for all Salesforce customers that want to integrate the capabilities of both platforms to build customer-friendly apps.Bridging The GapForce.com uses an object-oriented programming language called Apex, which was invented by Salesforce but incompatible with Heroku. This lack of synchronization became a major point of criticism when Salesforce purchased Heroku in 2010.Conversely, Heroku developers often build their apps with programming languages like Node.js, PHP, Ruby on Rails, Java, Go, and Python—but none of these languages are compatible within Salesforce’s native environment.Heroku Connect finally addresses this disconnection by allowing Heroku apps to sync with the Force.com database. In an interview with ReadWrite, Margaret Francis, senior director of product management at Heroku, said restaurant chain Red Robin has begun beta testing Heroku Connect and it has already built a customer loyalty mobile app using Heroku for the front end interface.Customers can interact with special offers in the app, for example, and the data gets synced back to Salesforce’s business process environment on the back end. Customer data flows from the Heroku-built user interface to business processes built with Force.com on the back end. anthony myers Related Posts Tags:#apex#cloud#developers#enterprise#Heroku#heroku connect tool#mobile#Open Source#Salesforce#salesforce1 Instead of a deep integration with Heroku, Salesforce customers can at least connect those apps to Salesforce without the need for extensive recoding, which is a potentially expensive and time-consuming affair. Salesforce knows it needs to show off tools like Heroku Connect to attract developers and convince them Force.com will work with popular Web toolkits like Node.js, Ruby on Rails and Java.In time, Salesforce may yet achieve a deeper level of integration with Heroku—but after four years, at least developers can connect the two worlds in a more seamless way. Developers need to be able to build apps quickly and at Web scale, and Heroku is one of Salesforce’s best weapons to allow them to do it.Heroku Connect is part of the Salesforce1 Connected Customer App Package, and pricing varies based on app usage.Lead image by Flickr user Danae Pollack under Creative Commons license How Intelligent Data Addresses the Chasm in Cloud Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hostinglast_img read more

first_imgPolice said Sean Hoare, the whistleblower reporter who alleged widespread hacking at the News of the World, has been found dead. The phone-hacking controversy took a new turn on Monday with the death of a former News of the World journalist, Sean Hoare, who first alleged that illegal practices were being adopted at the tabloid under the editorship of Andy Coulson.Coulson, who was arrested two weeks ago, resigned as editor of the tabloid due to the phone-hacking allegations, but was later hired by David Cameron as his communications director as leader of the opposition and also later as Prime Minister.Hoare was found dead on Tuesday at his home in Watford, but his death was not being considered as suspicious. The issue continued to rock the corridors of power as two top police officers of the Scotland Yard – Sir Paul Stevenson and John Yats – resigned, even as anticipation built up about on Tuesday hearing before MPs of Rupert and James Murdoch, and Rebekah Brooks. The Culture, Media and Sport Committee of the House of Commons is scheduled to examine the three leading lights of the controversy while Sir Paul Stevenson, former police commissioner, will appear before the Home Affairs Select Committee. The hearings will be telecast live, and are expected to register a wide audience due to the phone-hacking controversy that has hit Murdoch’s media empire in the UK hard.Hoare first levelled allegations about phone-hacking at the now defunct tabloid in a New York Times investigation into the phone-hacking issue.advertisementHe told the newspaper that not only did Coulson know of the phone hacking, but that he actively encouraged his staff to intercept the phone calls of celebrities in the pursuit of exclusives. In a subsequent interview with the BBC he alleged that he was personally asked by his then-editor, Coulson, to tap into phones.- With PTI inputslast_img read more
