Photo credit: kirtok.comA $6,000 fine has been imposed on Cornelius Defoe of Sineku who pleaded guilty to possession of Cannabis and Cannabis rum when he appeared before the Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.Defoe was charged for possession of cannabis and possession of cannabis in a quantity of more than 15 grams with intent to supply to another.According to police prosecutor Innocent Toussaint on May 15th, 2012 members of the drug squad executed a warrant at the home of the defendant in his presence but no illegal substance was found. However police found a clear plastic bag outside the house which contained what appeared to be cannabis. When Defoe was questioned by the police officers in regard to the contents of the plastic bag, he said replied; “weed for me to take my little smoke now and then”.The police then discovered a bottle marked “night train” with a substance resembling cannabis.Defoe said “officer some marijuana rum I had in that. It’s for my own use, I don’t sell those things,” when asked about the bottle. Before passing sentence magistrate Candia Carette-George asked the defendant if there was anything he wished to say to the court. He said he didn’t have any “intention” of supplying the drugs and also that he had young children.Carette-George noted that because the defendant had pleaded guilty, had not wasted the courts time and was a first time offender she would impose a fine of $6,000 to be paid by June 30th 2012.In default Defoe will have to spend 6 months in prison.
