O’NANCE Dedicates Modern Science, Computer Labs

first_imgO’NANCE’s campus in PaynesvilleTo maintain its standard as one of the leading schools in Paynesville, the O’NANCE International Christian School over the weekend dedicated a first class science laboratory. The school, located in 72nd Community on the Somalia Drive, simultaneously dedicated a high-tech computer lab on the campus. These developments could not have come at a better time as Liberia transitions from WAEC (West African Examination Council) to the regionally synchronized WASSCE (West African Senior School Certificate Examination). The lab boasts of several modern equipment for use in Biology, Chemistry and Physics courses.O’NANCE’s proprietor, Aaron J. Wheagar, Sr. performed the official dedication of the labs at a program where the Student Council Government was also inducted. It is imperative for schools to have quality science labs. And in order to understand its concepts, one has to look beyond the books and conventional classroom instruction. Unfortunately, this has never been the case in many schools, even some universities in the country. But O’NANCE, according to Mr. Wheagar, is poised to do things differently—endeavoring to provide the best for the students.“Effective teaching and learning of science involves seeing, handling, and manipulating real objects and materials. The knowledge that students attain in classrooms would be ineffectual unless they actually observe the process and understand the relationship between action and reaction,” Wheagar said.He added, “It is against this backdrop that we thought it prudent to invest heavily into these initiatives, because we want the best for our students. We are not here solely for profit-making but to impact, so we spent over US$10,000 on the project.”The science lab contains several instruments, including light and optics, measurement, magnet and magnetism and sound and wave motion equipment. The lab is also equipped with a microscope, test tubes, biology microscope slide test, electrolyte challenge kit. There are also several chemicals, such as potassium permanganate, hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide and others. The computer lab, on the other hand, is considered a first ‘A’ grade lab as it has equipment that can be found in any high-tech lab across the world.A partial view of the O’NANCE science LaboratoryO’NANCE has been working with Edify-Liberia, a Christian organization that works in the education sector, which has been providing financial assistance through loans and other technical support. Edify seeks to provide better academic and life-skills training to students at all partnership schools.Up to date, the organization has impacted 126 schools. O’NANCE is a beneficiary of 166 loans disbursed to 124 schools across the country. This amounts to US$726,888, which has trained a total of 308 school administrators and 277 teachers.By virtue of equipping itself, O’NANCE is endeavoring to contribute a lot in the current scientific advances and others yet to come, the school’s principal, Andrew G. Dayougah, said.“Schools must have the latest science lab supplies and equipment to make science interesting and effective for students and to encourage them to make significant contributions in the field of physics, biology, chemistry, and other streams of science later in life, and this is what we are doing here,” Dayougah said.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
