A’s nightmare road trip ends with thud in 13th inning

first_imgPITTSBURGH, Pa. — The A’s can’t get home soon enough. After it looked like they would win in 13 innings Sunday at PNC Park, the home team clawed back, and Pirates center fielder Starling Marte’s walkoff home run handed the A’s a 5-3 loss.Fernando Rodney served it up, spoiling what looked to be a terrific pitching performance by the A’s.As a result, the A’s wrapped up this road trip with just one win in nine games. Press release: South Africa’s FDI profile positions the country as a highly attractive investment destination

first_imgThe EY 2017 Attractiveness Programme Africa, measures the FDI attractiveness of 46 African markets and moreover indicates that South Africa experienced an increase of 6.9% in FDI flows to the market in 2016. (Image:EY 2017 Attractiveness Programme Africa)Johannesburg, Monday 22 May 2017 – The South African Nation Brand continues to be the largest recipient of FDI on the African continent, and is the largest source of intra-regional investment – this is in addition to having recently made a comeback in the top 25 most attractive global investment destinations. This is according to findings from the EY Attractiveness Programme Africa 2017, the AT Kearney Foreign Direct Investment Confidence Index, as well as the Brand South Africa’s Investor Perceptions Research.Brand South Africa’s General Manager for Research – Dr Petrus de Kock says the findings on South Africa’s FDI profile underlines the fact that global investors have confidence in the market, and see the country as an attractive investment destination. “Opportunities identified in these respective indices should be vigorously pursued through a collaborative approach between business and government in South Africa – especially after the credit ratings downgrade,” adds Dr de Kock..Major findings from these indices are that South Africa attracted 20.6% of all FDI projects on the African continent in 2016 with an increase of 6.9% on 2015; the country is the 6th largest source of FDI in the African economy; and the diversified economy, geographical location, infrastructure (hard and soft) and logistical capabilities – play a major role in attracting investment, trade and related global economic activity.“South Africa continues to attract the bulk of FDI projects destined for the continent with a share of 20.6%, Egypt at 11.7%, Morocco at 12%, Nigeria at 7.5%, and Kenya at 5.9%. Notable in this regard is that EY indicates investment flows favoured Africa’s more diversified markets. This means South Africa’s economic profile and diversification remains a key attractiveness feature. The EY 2017 Attractiveness Programme Africa further notes that even as its economy remains under pressure, South Africa retains its appeal as a launchpad for growth across the continent,” said Dr de Kock. The EY 2017 Attractiveness Programme Africa, measures the FDI attractiveness of 46 African markets and moreover indicates that South Africa experienced an increase of 6.9% in FDI flows to the market in 2016. The sectors that dominated include: Consumer Products and Retail – projects more than doubled from 19 in 2015 to 41 in 2016.The 2017 A.T. Kearney Foreign Direct Investment Confidence Index is characterised by a perception of safety in developed markets – Europe in particular. However, the 2017 Index marked the emergence of newcomers UAE, New Zealand, and South Africa – a clear sign of slight increase in investment intentions in emerging markets according to Dr de Kock.“According to the AT Kearney FDI Confidence Index, South Africa GDP growth is expected to reach 0.8% in 2017 and double to 1.6% in 2018, A.T. Kearney notes that with the country’s improvements in infrastructure and education, investors view South Africa as being poised to lead one of the world’s next major manufacturing hubs,” concluded Dr de Kock.Follow the conversation on #SANationBrandlast_img read more

Rain and cooler temperatures stressing crops

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Cooler temperatures and scattered rain events were the norm for most of the State last week, according to Cheryl Turner, State Statistician, USDA NASS, Ohio Field Office. There were 5.0 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending September 1. Topsoil and subsoil moisture rated adequate and surplus increased from the previous week. Some crops began to show stress from continued rainfall. Warmer temperatures were reportedly needed for some late planted crops. In areas where fields weren’t too wet, producers were able to spray fungicides and herbicides, apply manure, and till prevent plant acres. Although wet conditions hindered crop progress in some areas, rains were generally beneficial to corn and soybean growth. Corn and soybeans rated in good to excellent condition showed a slight increase from the previous week. Alfalfa hay second cutting and oat harvest wrapped up last week. Progress was made in both alfalfa and other hay third cutting and a few producers were able to start alfalfa fourth cutting.last_img read more

In 1992, casinos kept just 2.81 percent of the wagers they handled on sports. Over the next 15 years, casinos got better at wooing easier marks in, and their haul peaked at 7.89 percent in 2006. In 2017 the house took 5.11 percent of all sports wagers. Ohio State womens basketball loses second straight game falls at Purdue 7458

Sophomore guard Ameryst Alston (14) shoots over a defender during a game against Michigan State Jan. 26 at the Schottenstein Center. OSU, 82-68.Credit: Kaily Cunningham / Multimedia editorThe Ohio State women’s basketball team (14-12, 4-6) dropped their second straight game by double digits Thursday, falling to No. 25 Purdue, 74-58.Consistency on the offensive end continued to plague the Buckeyes, as they shot just 34.5 percent from the field and turned the ball over 16 times. The Buckeyes also lacked balance on the offensive end as only two players scored in double digits for OSU. Sophomore guard Ameryst Alston scored a game-high 26 points on 9-19 shooting, while junior guard Raven Ferguson scored 13 points on 3-15 shooting.OSU had five different players score in double figures in the first matchup between the two teams on Jan. 2, an 89-78 Buckeye victory.Purdue was without their leading scorer in redshirt-senior guard KK Houser, who tore her ACL Feb. 2 in a game against Michigan State. The Boilermakers did not seem to be phased as they had five players score in double figures.Purdue senior guard Courtney Moses led the way for the Boilermakers, scoring 18 points on 6-12 shooting while also hitting two of her three attempts from behind the arc.The Buckeyes, who normally get solid play from their bench, only received points from Ferguson as senior center Ashley Adams was held to just one shot attempt in 25 minutes of play.OSU was outrebounded 43-37 and did not tally a single fast break point on the night. The Buckeyes trailed by nine at the break, but could only manage to get within seven of the Boilermakers in the second half, trailing by as much as 19 before Ferguson hit a 3-pointer with 24 seconds remaining to close out the game.OSU are set return home on Sunday at 2 p.m. to take on the No. 9 Penn State Nittany Lions who gave the Buckeyes their worst loss on the season, a 66-42 drubbing in University Park, Pa. on Jan. 16. read more

Tottenham ends interest in Wilfried Zaha

first_imgTottenham is no longer looking to secure Wilfried Zaha after finding out Crystal Palace kept the Premier League winger monetary value at an incredible £70million.Zaha has been one of the high-profile targets Tottenham have been considering to secure since they’re determined to back coach Mauricio Pochettino in the transfer window this summer. The 25-year-old had a superb season at Palace and assisted in keeping them in the Premier League. Despite now representing Ivory Coast at international level, he would still crucially count as a homegrown player in their Champions League squad next term due to coming through Palace’s academy.Joel Ward, Crystal PalaceHow Joe Ward thanks his faith for his football Manuel R. Medina – September 13, 2019 Crystal Palace defender, Joel Ward, has thanked his Christian faith for helping him play football professionally and he explains why.It seems Palace have no intention of selling Zaha as it’s obvious he is one of their backbone assets, they also put him in a similar bracket as Riyad Mahrez, who could soon be joining Manchester City from Leicester for £75m, but instead of cashing in, Roy Hodgson’s side are actually planning to offer Zaha another new contract, according to Standard Sport. He agreed on a five-year deal with Palace worth around £110,000 a week in May 2017. The plan then was to scare off other clubs from pursuing him and as we can see, that’s really the case too.Tottenham see Zaha as an upgrade on the inconsistent Erik Lamela, as well as an option to play up front.last_img read more

The reason Leeds United fans now hate Marcelo Bielsa

first_imgMarcelo Bielsa has done it again, he went from being highly beloved and revered at Leeds United, to being hated by the fans in record time. The stories about Marcelo Bielsa not being able to manage his clubs properly in the past are countless, but he has fallen from grace in record time at Leeds United this time. It took only a few days for the fans to consider him a world-class manager, to completely question the decisions he made before the international break. The Argentine manager decided to send striker Patrick Bamford to the under 23 squad for an unknown reason, but knowing Bielsa’s troubled relationships with players they must have had a falling out and Bielsa reacted poorly as always. This decision took the worst turn possible a few days ago, as the €8 million striker who arrived this summer to Leeds, suffered a nasty knee injury that will keep him out of competition for the next four months. The fans at the English club can’t give credit to the situation, because they consider the player an essential part of the new project, but Bielsa’s decision backtracks it quite a bit from this moment forward.? | #LUFC striker Patrick Bamford faces four months on the sidelines after suffering a PCL injury during last Friday’s U23s game— Leeds United (@LUFC) September 11, 2018This news comes in one of the most crucial moments in the first half of the season, because international breaks can sometimes be detrimental to any club that was doing great before the break and then decrease their performance level dramatically afterward. Leeds United’s Director of Football issued a statement after the news of the player’s condition broke and said: “This is clearly disappointing news for Patrick and for everyone at Leeds United. Patrick has settled in well, quickly becoming an important player for Marcelo Bielsa and a popular part of the group. We have an excellent medical team at the club and Patrick is in the best possible hands, he will be back available to us during an important part of the season and he will still play a key role in our campaign,” said Victor Orta in the statement that revealed the time that the player would be out of competition. But the repercussion of this new development at Leeds United will affect Marcelo Bielsa even more than the player himself, because this is a pattern that has appeared in the past for the manager in previous jobs.£10m signing ❌Top scorer ❌Best midfielder ❌In-form defender ❌It’s all mounting up for table-topping Leeds, but Marcelo Bielsa says he has a plan… ? https://t.co/vd2DMsuS9N #lufc pic.twitter.com/rz0oJfoXKhRaheem Sterling, EnglandTop 5 best players from the international break weekend Tomás Pavel Ibarra Meda – September 11, 2019 After a fresh international break just came to an end, we need to talk about the Top 5 best players during this whole weekend. We…— BBC Sport (@BBCSport) September 13, 2018Bielsa’s past in Chile and Athletic Club. The Argentine manager has had some very interesting runs with the Chile National Team and Spanish side Athletico Club, but in both instances he had to step down due to the poor relationship he had with the players and eventually the fans. With Chile the stories go more along the lines of the manager outright disrespecting the players by calling them names and having violent verbal outbursts, more of the same happened with the Spanish club. But in both instances, Marcelo Bielsa left a very important legacy that gives him a street cred that very few managers in the world can get. He transformed Chile into a very competitive side during his time there and many credit the two Copa America trophies the squad won to his teachings, he also reached the Europa League final with Athletic Bilbao back in 2012 but lost it against Atletico Madrid. With Leeds United, something very similar is happening as Bielsa has two victories and two draws in the first six games of the season and has surprised English football with his offensive style of play. But his problems outside the field could be his downfall, once again.Bielsa: ‘I’m not familiar with the atmosphere at #Millwall – but I can’t think of any fans who would have more influence than ours.” That sounds like a challenge, Lions fans.
