They conceived of the event as a collaboration or performance blending two very different art forms. A traditional tea ceremony was discussed, then dismissed as two complicated for the venue. They then decided to serve edomae style sushi on the carved yellow cedar “i-beams” in Minoru Ohira’s installation in the East Gallery, merging their masterful genres with a soupçon of dry wit.Edomae style sushi is a Japanese cuisine initially created by the Edo (old name for Tokyo) fast food businesses during the 1820’s. The sushi were prepared and sold on the streets by stands at a time when there was no refrigeration.Chef and artist Mori Onodera, formerly at the helm of Mori Sushi in Los Angeles, served his own locally grown rice and created handmade plates for the restaurant. He is currently making plates for Michelin Guide restaurants Melisse and Providence in Los Angeles and Manresa in Los Gatos. He has also embarked on a new project to grow premium Japanese rice in Uruguay.Artist Minoru Ohira has exhibited extensively at galleries and museums in the US, Mexico and Japan and is in the collections of The Hara Museum of Contemporary Art (Tokyo), the Honolulu Museum of Art, the Long Beach Museum of Art (Long Beach, California), the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Thailand (Bangkok) and the National Museum of Art in Mexico.Ohira is the recipient of the prestigious 26th Denchu Hirakushi Award for the art of wood carving. In 2009 he was awarded the 36th Teijiro Nakagawa Award, the first artist residing outside Japan to be honored with the award.Click here for more information about Mori Onodera.Click here for more information about Minoru Ohira.Offramp Gallery, 1702 Lincoln Avenue, Pasadena, (626) 298-6931 or visit www.offrampgallery.com. Amsterdam, Netherlands | AFP | Jesse Lingard scored his first England goal as a reshaped side beat the Netherlands 1-0 in an Amsterdam friendly on Friday. This was England’s last away match before they travel to Russia for this year’s World Cup finals and they were rewarded with a well-deserved win against a Dutch side who will be one of the major absentees from the showpiece tournament. The result gave England their first win over the Netherlands since manager Gareth Southgate was a member of the side that triumphed 4-1 at Wembley during Euro 96.It also condemned Dutch great Ronald Koeman to defeat in his first match as manager of the Oranje. It was a goal that had been coming, with England’s midfield starting to find their onrushing forwards with through balls early in the second half.England faced early disruption when Liverpool’s Joe Gomez went off injured just minutes into the game, his place taken by Harry Maguire.Share on: WhatsApp Pages: 1 2 Turning to Lingard, he added: “I’m delighted for Jesse, he’s a player we’ve worked with for three or four years from the Under-21s and this year he is starting to finish the chances.”Meanwhile former Southampton and Everton manager Koeman said: “Defensively we played quite well, but didn’t create many chances. And we made some mistakes as well.”Shortly after England were denied what seemed a clear penalty, Manchester United midfielder Lingard scored the only goal of the game in the 59th minute. Several England players advanced their case for World Cup selection, with just next week’s friendly at home to Italy to come before Southgate picks his squad.“It was a good test for us, we came away from home and controlled the game,” Southgate told ITV Sport.– ‘Delighted for Jesse’ –
Despite the haste with which retired Justice James Patterson was unilaterally appointed to the post of Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), not even one meeting has been called with the full commission to discuss matters of importance at the entity.According to GECOM Commissioner Sase Gunraj, this is a matter of concern for the commission, since there are matters pertaining to GECOM’s financial accountability which have to be discussed. This includes the recent disturbing findings made by the Auditor General’s office.“It’s one day short of a month since we had the announcement that there was a new chairman of GECOM, and since then we haven’t had a meeting. We’ve had no indication as to when a meeting will be called; nothing!” Gunraj said in an interview with this newspaper. He added that for the better part of the year, commissioners had no idea about the proper functioning of GECOM.“So my anxiety is as to whether we will have a meeting. We were hoping that the haste the President ascribed to the necessity for appointment of a chairman would have been met with the holding of the meeting,” Gunraj said.He noted that the commission did not deliberate on the budget proposal submitted to the Government. GECOM had requested .7 billion, but its proposal was slashed to .9 billion, some 0 million less than it had sought.“We have been reading in the news that a budget proposal has been assented in relation to GECOM. GECOM is a Schedule Three agency. We have not had any opportunity to make input or see that budget. And in the past, we have actually sat and approved that budget before it went to the National Assembly,” Gunraj disclosed.Retired Justice James PattersonPatterson, who was an advisor in the Legal Affairs Ministry, was sworn in just a few hours after President David Granger had met with Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo briefly on October 19.According to the Head of State, his late-night decision to select a GECOM chairman was done in accordance with Article 161 of the Constitution for the appointment of a GECOM Chairman.Granger said he informed Jagdeo during their meeting that he found that the third list of nominees submitted on August 25, 2017 was unacceptable within the meaning of the Constitution, and that he had also paid careful attention to the ruling of the Chief Justice (Acting) Roxane George-Wiltshire.In justifying why he decided to hand-pick 84-year-old Justice Patterson for this position, the President has said that Patterson has had extensive experience as a former Chief Justice of Grenada. However, it has since come to light that Patterson never served as a substantive Chief Justice, but rather acted briefly in the position. The decision has not gone down well with the political opposition. During a subsequent press conference, Jagdeo announced that his party would be withdrawing its support from any form of ceremonial cooperation with Government, and would also mount a legal challenge to the appointment.A challenge to the appointment has already been filed in the High Court, and that case will be called for hearing in January 2018. That challenge seeks to revoke Patterson’s appointment.A number of bodies, including the Guyana Bar Association, the Private Sector Commission (PSC) and the Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association (GMSA), have come out in condemnation of the President’s decision.Criticism has also come from the Guyana Human Rights Association (GHRA) and members of the diaspora.
2 October 2009 There’s certainly nothing conventional about Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit – dubbed “Africa’s wildest stadium”. The nickname’s not in reference to overly boisterous football fans; you’d be hard-pressed to find more laid-back, easy-going people than in South Africa’s Mpumalanga province. Rather, the nickname refers to something South Africa, and Mpumalanga in particular, is world-renowned for – its abundant wildlife, which strongly influenced the design of the stadium. As World Cup visitors approach Mbombela Stadium in 2010 they will see giant orange “giraffes” standing ready to welcome them, in the form of the towering roof columns that dominate the stadium’s façade. The venue’s seating is criss-crossed black and white to resemble zebra prints, while traditional Ndebele paintings light up the stadium’s meeting rooms, foyer and lounge areas. And if the giant orange giraffes didn’t catch your eye, the stadium’s corridors light up with psychedelic green, yellow, blue and orange walls that will have World Cup players reaching for their designer shades next year. Conventional it certainly isn’t, but with its dollops of colour, flair and imagination, the stadium will certainly stand out during the world sport’s biggest showpiece. More than just an eye-catcher, however, the stadium is a fantastic, compact football venue, with great views and comfortable spaces for teams, spectators, media and broadcasters. With the pitch newly laid, its 43 540 permanent seats already installed, and public address system and giant screen in place, Mbombela Stadium is weeks away from completion and chomping at the bit to showcase its warmth, vitality and the vibrance of its people to the world. The future didn’t always look as bright, as the city authorities navigated a number of construction strikes and disputes. But despite the challenges, the city and the workers have created a real bushveld gem. “This is really exciting,” says Mbombela Mayor Lassy Chiwayo. “For us this is a story of commitment, resilience and hard work. There are many unsung heroes who have made this possible. I want to pay tribute to the construction workers and to the community, who threw their weight behind us. “This new baby towering above us symbolises hope,” says Chiwayo. “We’re hoping this tournament will act as a stimulus for economic and social development.” He said it was important to the city and province that its rich cultural diversity, preserved over many years, was showcased during the World Cup. And he added that with neighbouring countries Mozambique and Swaziland intimately involved, Mbombela was well-placed to deliver on South Africa’s promise of “a distinctively African World Cup”. He won’t be doing so against WBC champion Deontay Wilder, who also is undefeated and most recently fought to a draw with Tyson Fury in December. On June 11, 2016, the National Park Service and the National Park Foundation will partner with Common to host the second event in the organizations’ Park Exchange Series, bringing the musical experience of New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park to Chicago. The public is invited to join the celebration of the National Park Service’s 100th anniversary in this innovative exchange that will highlight the diversity of park experiences and the breadth of our National Park System. This exchange is part of the #FindYourPark/#EncuentraTuParque centennial celebration for the National Park Service. For each of the three Park Exchange events, a national park experience is conveyed to – or exchanged with – one of America’s urban centers. For Chicago’s Park Exchange, a New Orleans second line will swing from one musically rich city to another.“Chicago and New Orleans are two culturally diverse cities with rich histories in music and I’m honored that the National Park Service and National Park Foundation invited me to be a part of this experience,” said Common. “I grew up on the Southside of Chicago and think the second line will be an especially meaningful and wonderful tradition for our community. I hope this event will inspire people to find their park.”The heart of a second line is its ability to unite communities and encourage them to join the festivities, offering a unique opportunity for the Southside neighborhood of Chicago to experience the culture celebrated at a national park in Louisiana: New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park.On June 11th, Common will serve as Honorary Grand Marshall for the Park Exchange celebration and will kick off the second line celebration through Washington Park joined by the National Park Foundation, the National Park Service, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and New Orleans’s Treme Brass Band and Black Men of Labor. (Note: Common will not be performing during the celebration). Chicagoans are invited to join the festivities at the entrance of 57th Street and MLK Drive at 11:30 AM CDT.The celebration, which is free and open to the public, will include: • Opening Remarks with Common, Will Shafroth (President of the National Park Foundation), Peggy O’Dell (Deputy Director of the National Park Service) • Second line jazz festival through the city of Chicago at 12:00 PM CDT with NPF, NPS, Treme Brass Band and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble • Interactive stations from National Park Foundation Find Your Park/Encuentra Tu Parque Partners: ◦ The Coleman Company who will have a merchandise vignette centered around our National Park Foundation commemorative line, a giant blow up 20’ lantern, Coleman lawn games, and other fun giveaways. ◦ Humana who will demonstrate how spending time in a national, state or local community park can benefit your physical and mental well being. Through the use of 360 virtual reality technology, Humana will transport you to the rugged rock formations of Joshua Tree and into the giant, ancient Sequoia forests of Yosemite. The breathtaking views will inspire you to find your park and embrace the great things ahead, as you start a journey towards renewed health. ◦ Subaru of America who will be on-site to raise awareness of its National Park Zero-Landfill Initiative, an effort to significantly reduce waste going into landfills from all national parks. Attendees will be able to enjoy a variety of interactive activities and learn how they can help and of course win prizes. In addition to the Chicago-New Orleans music theme, the event will also engage rangers from one of our nation’s newest national parks, Pullman National Monument in Chicago. Pullman rangers will be on hand to talk about the park and its ongoing development.“Most people know that the National Park Service preserves amazing landscapes, but the Park Exchange event series demonstrates that we care for America’s cultural and historic treasures, too,” said National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis. “New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park and Pullman National Monument are just two of the many parks where visitors can experience our nation’s rich and diverse cultural heritage. We especially hope that the series will help young people discover what national parks can mean to them.”The Chicago and New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park Exchange is the second event in the series, which is designed to bring parks to life in urban areas and demonstrate the diversity of park experiences. In May, the National Park Service and National Park Foundation brought the iconic redwood trees to the city of Austin, Texas to juxtapose the nature of Redwood National and State Parks in California against the architecture of the iconic University of Texas Tower, which soars high at 307 feet above Austin, the average height of a redwood tree. In August, the Park Exchange event series will culminate in New York City, taking the innovation from Thomas Edison National Historical Park in a small New Jersey town, to the iconic big city skyline.“A park experience can be many things that can transform lives and shape minds. That is what we’re creating with the Park Exchange event series,” said Will Shafroth, president of the National Park Foundation, the official charity of America’s national parks. “Through this unique exchange, we are opening up a whole new world of discovery as people experience first-hand how parks are so much more than grass and trees. Parks can be music, community, and culture.”The Park Exchange event series is part of the Find Your Park/Encuentra Tu Parque movement, which was launched in March 2015 by the National Park Service and the National Park Foundation to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the National Park Service. Inspiring people from all backgrounds to celebrate and support America’s national parks and community-based programs, #FindYourPark invites people to discover and share their own unique connections to our nation’s natural landscapes, vibrant culture, and rich history. Some of the most admired companies in the world are supporting the National Park Foundation’s efforts for #FindYourPark, including American Express, Budweiser, Subaru, REI, Humana and Disney. Additional partners include Coleman and Coca-Cola.A calendar of events taking place across the country to celebrate the National Park Service Centennial can be found at FindYourPark.com/Find.
